Peter
I understand where you are coming from. I was trying to help & make things simpler. I recalled that Helmut had posted you lived close to DJ and it was therefore easy to get the caps and send them off with my blades.
Others may also prefer to tap their own if it means avoiding an extended delay, without making things more complex for you, or increase postage costs.
I am sure your efforts are appreciated by all.

Is it another odd Stanley thread or something standard?
Cheers, Ern

ISTR it's a standard thread - which is why we needed to get new screws made to hold the blade to the cap iron
Cheers

Just had a rummage through the bolt collection. One old common one worked on an original chip breaker; bolt was marked only with an N on top. Whitworth? UNC?

The comment in post #1 above from Helmut in relation to the cap iron in was " this will come beveled and tapped for a 1/4" 28 TPI UNF thread and a matching cap screw "
Assuming this thread has not been changed to something more exotic, It should not be too difficult nor costly to find one of these taps.

ok I just heard from Dj. He has tapped the caps. He ran out of time to deliver them to me as he had to go back to the work he is doing away from home. He said he may be home next Mon or tuesday. He will bring them to me then or if he wants I will go up there and pick them up. His place is only about 3/4 hour from mine. I have a big box of screws, they are not the same size as my old plane screws. I am sure they will match the caps. So if you can all hold on till next week we may be good. Anyone know Medium_Al's name for the post. He is one that I could have posted as he only has 1 blade. Also looking for Gerry the Elder.
I am learning, slowley.

Thanks for the feedback. I am ( and I am sure others will be ) pleased to hear that the actual work has now been completed, and it should now be only a matter of collecting, sorting, and posting, which I think you have demonstrated you are very capable of accomplishing.
It is clear from your posts that there is some frustration for you in getting the job finished & I wish you well, and thanks again for stepping up.
