Thread: The Second Stanley Plane Blade Order

I beleive the 4 1/2, 5 1/2 and 7 all use a 2 3/8" (60mm) blade. No 4 is a 2" blade (50mm).

Hello Mark - Kman beat me to the punch.

The No. 4 1/2 and the No. 7 take a 2 3/8" blades and the Standard No. 5 1/2 takes a 2 1/4" blade (according to Patricks blood and gore site.)

The No. 4 takes a 2" blade.

Therefore for your bench planes you are looking at:

Two Blades at 2 3/8"
One Blade at 2 1/4"
One Blade at 2"

Regarding the block plane, If there is enough interest in a 60 1/2 block plane blade, then yes we can do it. I will add the option to the list, and we will see how it goes.

2 x 2" Blade with cap irons and bevel.
2 x 2 3/8" Blade with cap irons and bevel.
1 x 2 1/8" Rebate Blade with cap iron and bevel.

All with cap irons and bevel.

I purchased all my planes off ebay at differet times, but the blades on the no 7 and the 4 1/2 are 59mm and the blade on the 5 1/2 is 60mm???
I guess they were changed/lost etc over time as they are quite old, around WWII and earlier I believe.

I am happy to purchase those blades that you have suggested as they should be correct. I think Kman may be correct on the 5 1/2 as the mouth is the same width as the other 2 planes. So that would mean 3 X 2 3/8" and 1 X 2".

Do you think it would be worth upgrading the 60 1/2? the plane is unused and not a new one, not sure exactly how old it is?

IF the block plane cleans up nicely and he no chips or cracks, then it would be worth it.

I think I will sell the 4 1/2 when I get the 4.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum - I stumbled across it when trying to learn more about honing plane irons and am amazed by the depth of experience and knowledge to be found here. I'm also into some metal machining, so it's great to find this forum also has a section on that black art.

I've got a Stanley No.5 jack plane that I've tried to bring into good order. The plane itself is OK, however I've found that the iron is pretty warped (it's got a diagonal twist through it's length). I made up a honing tool that pulls it into straight for honing and it should sit straight when in the plane but the results aren't great - so time for a new blade.

So, can I order a 2" with a bevel please - if it's not too late.

Also, how do I organise payment and pick-up/delivery?

Hello Medium_Al, and welcome to the forum.

I have added you to the list for a 2" Stanley blade.

The way it works is that we collect expression of interests to fill a sheet a sheet of M2. Once we have enough people on board we have the blades manufactured, and we start collecting funds. At this point we are up to 51 blades, we need about 110 to get the order going. I hope to get the blades going by mid March 2010.

I notice that orders for the blades have been pretty slow, this is possibly due to the thread hiding on page 2 and only comes forward if someone adds to the thread.

How do we go about getting a sticky for the thread so it stays at the top of page 1?

I think it more likely that the original order was only completed a short while ago and most people got their fill in the first round.
