Question Does anyone know where I can find this Stanley Plane info?

    Hello,

I have a stanley #4 smooth plane, it has a plastic/bakelite adjusting nut...does anyone know where or how I can find the date of manufacture? or how much it is worth?

    Thanks so much.

Going on my memory which isn't always accurate these days, I remember seeing them in the shops across here about twenty years or more ago. They were aimed at the lower end of the market. The plastic adjuster was no good on the one I saw. It was a period when stanley were selling hand drills made in India, and they weren't much good either.
I can't imagine there are too many around any more. If so they might be worth something for scarcity value.
    Regards,
    Jim

Looks like a very interesting site, thanks.

I *think* the plastic adjusting nut in this case has something to do with war production--but I could be wrong. I tried emailing stanley directly and no one responded to my inquiry.

The war production rang a bell. Try this site http://www.roseantiquetools.com/id186.html
They have one listed at $60.
The type I was thinking of earlier was aimed at the 'handyman' market.
