    Default Stanley plane parts interchangability

    Evening all.

Did pick up a Stanley No6 today at the big sale. Brought it home, cleaned off all the cag to find what looks to be a Record frog (it's blue. There was a lot of cag might I add. ). I took it off and rummaged through my spares box where I found a Stanley 4 1/2 in a less than super state. The frog seems almost the same but I'm wondering if it is indeed compatible before I screw it all together, start planing and have my work interrupted by a dull crack as the frog implodes due to undue pressures in the bigger plane or such-like.

    Any ideas?

    Cheerio,
    Virg.

PS Anyone need a frog for a Record No6??!?!?!?

    Virg,
Stanley made planes went through quite a few changes to the frog - base mating arrangement. It is my experience that parts from each era are fully interchangeable.
Never seen or heard of a problem as you describe, where it will break out in use.
And from your plane perhaps having a Record frog fitted, it is most likely a later model.
    Pictures will tell all....

If the mating surfaces are mating well, a chalk line, lamp black, or layout ink will transfer from one to the other and show you. Always worth a look on any plane...part of the tuning up process if you like to do those things.
    Regards,
    Peter
