Stanley planes: replacement knobs and totes
A while ago I asked the brains trust about making these and got lots of good advice.
Then, with increasingly limited capacity and only one set that really had to be done, on a #4, I decided to order a pair made of Rosewood (of some description) by Crown.
Jim Davey's out of Rosewood were also a contender.
I liked the colour of the Crowns better, and with an order from the US of a number of items they ended up cheaper. USD40 + share of postage.
The kit came with knob, tote and tote stud.
The tote base recess is a bit tighter than the original on the Stanley #4 which pressed the tote forward a bit. I screwed it down nonetheless and will live with the risk of greater stress on the tote toe.
The knob brass nut was a bit proud of the knob and removing the washer solved this.
So this is a bit of a kludge and use will test the claim of 'bolt on replacement'.
Source.
IIRC Timbecon in WA also stock this kit.Cheers, Ern
