When is a Stanley not a Stanley.....
Clearly someone wanted a copy of the Stanley 98.................
I was give this recently in a box of very rusty old tools. It was in the bottom covered with crud.
I recognised the shape, but the handle looked wrong - a broken handle replaced with a home made knob, I thought.
And that blade looks wrong.....
When I started to clean it the body began to gleam and the blade revealed a Record stamp.
The body is made of brass.
So, what we have here is someone's lunch time foundry project - of a copy of the Stanley 98 side rebate plane body, with added bits.
Not a bad job actually

Hi Tom. I have seen quite a few brass bodied #71/ 71+1/2 router planes for sale. Apparently all copies

Hi Tom
I have a brass no.66 beading tool that has been cast by somebody. It is a bit heavier in its castings and the blade clamp is bigger for strength I guess. It even has Stanley and patent date on left hand side handle.
Regards,
Ross

Yes I can imagine that. The 71-1/2 in particular would be a fairly easy copy as it is completely flat
That would be interesting to re-cast. I imagine there would be several points of weakness to be reinforced
I wonder did they cast the fence as well

I’ll bet the Record blade is a re-purposed chisel!
I also have a roll-your-own Stanley, a number 80 cabinet scraper. It’s not a bad effort and was cast in iron; more importantly it works as good as a real one.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.
