    Default started planing

    Hi people,
I have finally started using the planes I have gathered for the past couple of years.
Resurrected a rickety old bench, put a new vice on it.
I suspect old jarrah fence rails arent the best way to start but I have a project I am trying to achieve with a timeframe.
Now I can go back re=read all the sharpening and setup posts with real intent.

Currently in a love affair with my hand planes, this is a pleasure to see! What's the project?

    Soo,
I have learned to not make the end pins too small especially in brittle wood.
Also learned that old jarrah fence rails are probably not the best material to try to learn dove tails with.
but I have done one shelf so far. can only get better.

    bit of an update here.
these are all now moticed and tennoned into the legs.
started gluing up a top from the same stock.
this is becoming a heavy thing.
I am starting to enjoy planing. must be getting better at shaprening and setting the planes because its getting smoother and more predicable.
also digging out more planes and getting them going just because I can now.
I really need to make a mallet next, my cheap Stanley chisels have taken a poinding from my steel hammer but nothing has fallen off yet.

    So, its done.
I enjoy using handtools. I can see more of it in my future, just with some newer, softer wood hopefully.
Appart from major dimensioning cuts on the table saw this is all done with:
    a modern tennon saw,
    an old dovetail saw,
selection of modern hardware store chisels (with a nail hitting hammer)
a lot of old planes that I progressively pulled out and tuned up.
I had never done a dovetails or a mortise n tennon before.
and the bottle in the shots was empty before i started.
