    Default Sticking board

    Hi all,

I know there has been a little discussion over shooting board of late.

I'm interested to know what designs of sticking boards people here are using.

    Regards

    Adam

    Hi Adam

I have posted about this in the past. Here is a link to the design I built: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ShopMad...ingBoard2.html

The advantage is that it is adjustable and can have different fences added.

The stop is a section of unhardened O1 steel filed into teeth ..

Also useful for ploughing drawer grooves ...

    Regards from Perth

    Many thanks Derek,

If you were given the chance to build that again, is there anything you would change in your design, or functionality that you would add?

Having never used one before i'm most interested in any advise you or others can give.

    Regards

    Adam

Comes down to what your trying to shape Adam .
My ones are as long as my bench . 7 and 8 foot stick moulds being pretty common on a type of side board/ Low dresser that I do . The first was a board with a stick nailed and glued down the middle with a stop at one end and on the other side of that stick a stop at the other end . long lengths of either blank timber or pre shaped routed moulds could be laid in the rebate and moulded or re shaped with My round and hollow moulding planes into what ever shape I needed. Because of the two stops at opposite ends my work could be flipped and I could come back the other way if needed .

That type evolved into a second type of sticking board which did what the first did and fitted my bench better using the dogs and tail vice.
On its edge I added a third option of a V rebate , 90 degree. With the sticking board taken and placed in the vice, the V faced the roof and square backed bits of wood with moulding at the front could be placed in up against a stop and worked . As well as round doweled shaped bits of any size .

So for me the sticking board is for moulding timber after its been cut from the board for furniture.

The first choice is to mould the wood and then cut it from the board. But that cant always be done .

They are the sort of thing that may have to be knocked together for a type of job you dont do very often . Maybe never again so rough throw back in the wood pile versions get made sometimes.

What are you intending on moulding or shaping in some way ?

It took a bit of googling to find out what a sticking board is, and what "sticking" referred to. So for any other numpties who are interested, this explanation from PWW:

Sticking boards are an excellent benchtop appliance when cutting mouldings by hand. A proper sticking board is an L-shaped device that holds the wood you want to “stick” (the old fashioned term for “cut mouldings.”)
    Carry on.

Here's My Sticking Board. With a demo .

The dog in the tail vice sits in a hole and pushes the SB into the dog at the far left end of the bench.
There is a slot at each end to take the dog at far left . One each end so SB can be rotated for coming back the other way. You need that sometimes for the grain run out, or the shape or moulding type requires it

Take the wood and draw moulding on end . If its a proper paying accurate job needed, do two paper templates and glue one at each end . If you want to plane the rebate waste wood out, do that . I cut it out on table saw.

    IMG_4099.JPGIMG_4100.JPGIMG_4101.JPG

Select a plane or two and go for it .
    IMG_4102.JPGIMG_4103.JPGIMG_4104.JPGIMG_4105.JPG

This is SB in vice for wood up against the stop facing up for fine tuning .
    IMG_4106.JPGIMG_4107.JPG

Same mould type as My Barossa Valley food cupboard turned Electric tool cupboard.
That was a ten minute job just before I came in for a late lunch . Round and Hollow Moulding planes for custom one at a time builds is easy and Fast work and makes it possible to add the moulding design of what ever you need or want . Very rewarding and fun too.

    Hi,
after I saw Derek's and auscab's solution I feel nearly ashamed of the one I made. But maybe it will still be worth sharing.

I made this one before Xmas. I had to cut grooves into longer boards to cut them later into smaller pieces for gift boxes. I just took some left over plywood and glued a fence onto it. As planing stop I put a row of screws into it. Then screwed a cleat underneath to hold it in my vice. I made it for this one job as a quick fix, but keep using it ever since.

The only thing now I wished to have a movable fence like Derek's. Instead I often have to put some spacers in from my scrap pile. I need this when the fence of the rebate plane or plough plane goes lower than the workpiece. Works well so far.
