My first thought was "what wood is that?" closely followed by "and how did they get that finish?", then I wished I hadn't thought about it at all...

well i did follow the leader and thought what could they be looking looking at .didn't think of those type of tools.

A few years ago I passed through Port Moresby airport and one of the few things available in the duty free shop (dare I say - about the only thing) were various versions of these - all in native timbers, from matched salt and pepper shakers to, umhn cough, I think, personal use items.
Taking advantage of cheap Jetstar fares to Japan, I visited Hokkaido last month to catch the cherry blossoms. Not getting any leads for things to checkout on the travel thread of this forum, among others I found this link including native Ainu Carvings. Although I didn't find Araki's particular shop we found many of the other bear and owl carving shops at Lake Akan.
