You do have to go searching for good old tools in Brisvegas, that's for sure. I have lucked into a few at flea markets, but most of what I've seen in those sorts of places is probably better off as landfill. So I think Bushmiller has short-circuited all the goodies, alright.

A few years ago I was told there was a regular vendor who had a few good tools at the Beenleigh markets if that's anywhere near your stamping grounds It was a few years ago now, so that information is probably out of date. I guess you just have to keep looking in any likely place & you'll eventually pick up the odd bargain. "Antique" stores are always worth a look, but they generally ask absurd prices for any decent tools, but occasionally you stumble on a gem at a sensible price.

My preference would certainly be for a good old pre-WW2 Disston or S&J if I were in the market (or any other good old brand, but those are far & away the most common). Failing that, buy the modern S&J knowing you'll probably have to sharpen & set it straight off, but sooner or later that's got to be done to the most expensive saws, so you may as well bite the bullet & give it a whirl. Once you can sharpen & set a saw, you'll never look back - it's just so much more fun using a sharp, well-set saw....
    Cheers,

For the price of most premium saws not just bad axe, I've managed to pick up a variety of sizes of saws from gumtree over a 6 month period approximately.

Then a disston saw vice and some bahco saw files and an old carpenters saw carry case, I've got pretty much all cleaned up and in use. Only one or two left to bring back to life

The carpenters case fits the saw vice, files, angle guide, all fit within to pack away when not in use

I don't feel too bad if I stuff up something sharpening but I've quickly come up to speed on how to do it at the rate I've been cleaning them.

They've got great bones and is prefer them anyday over some of the saws discussed in this thread.

    Cheers
    Nathan

Ahem. Reading this thread there appears to be some conjecture that I have collared the market in backsaws. I feel obliged to point out that if you think It is difficult to source vintage saws in Brisbane, you should try the same exercise here in Millmerran!

More than 95% of my saws were sourced from the US. I would dearly love to have bought from Oz, but it just did not happen. Having said that it would seem to be down to two options: Either refurbish a modern saw or refurbish a vintage saw (if you can get one).

He’s in Canberra - I’m sure you could track him down and “borrow” a saw or two.

You might be surprised what is in some graziers sheds.

Ha i wish. The three on the left were from the "great saw giveaway" here on the forum. The backsaws cheap as chips from gumtree.

Up Northern NSW these days, better update my forum details

    Default S&J Tenon saw

    Hi

I picked up a couple of Tenon saws last week,
and both are with plastic, yes plastic handles but
what lovely saws. One is a Stanley and the other
is a umm in the shed and cannot remember. They
    are from a guess from the 60s. I paid £ 1.00 for
both. Am chuffed as chips. Will post a pic tomorrow.

    Martin.

Hi WP. Ebay can work but you have to be patient and know what to look for. I recently got a dovetail saw for $27 plus postage. The medallion had the Disston keystone logo and ring of dots but no "Disston" or "Philada". I assumed a 2nd line Disston made by them for someone else. And I am waiting for another one to arrive, this time for $5 plus postage. Medallion is "full" Disston but handle is broken. These both need a fair bit of restoration but that is part of the fun.

I notice all the big saw pushes have gathered in this thread, especially when there seems to be fresh meat available.

I’m just saying ok,don’t shoot the messenger.

Sometimes it seems as though the Deep North is a different country from the Far South!

Down here, I find that there are three main sources for restorable tools, prioritised as:
    1. Tip shops - Hobart is the smallest capital but has heaps of councils, each with their own "waste recycling centre" (or whatever they're called this week) and each has its tip shop which sell recovered gems. I commonly visit Hobart, Glenorchy, Clarence and Kingborough tip shops - Brighton and outliers are a little too far.
    2. General auctions held weekly mainly selling deceased estates - Gowans Auctions is the best.
    3. Council Hard Rubbish Days - Combined with dog walking, can be an enjoyable exercise. Driving around does not really work for small tools.

Tip shop is the most productive, but with all some days are wasted.

Here, flea market stallholders tend to fettle their tools before sale, which, naturally, increases their price expectations - but generally good for prices "users".

A while back a friend's teenage son was checking out a Council Hard Rubbish Day and "recovered" a large screen TV. Next day he knocked on their door and politely enquired if they still had the TV remote. They did.
