Default The one that got away

One of the first things I do in the morning is check the marketplace and see what's been listed, see if anything catches my eye.

Well, this morning I found out that a whole bunch of Lie Nielson stuff was posted and I missed out - ruined my whole morning.

So I thought it might be fun to commiserate and share stories of the times we *just* missed out on something a little bit special.

What was the one that got away for you?

Many years ago when I got interested in hand tools I went to a tool auction in Brisbane where one of the lots was a sweet panel raising plane. I was making my first frame and panel doors at the time. I think the plane was solid box wood and had an elegantly curved blade to shape the bevel it cut. I think it must have been of European origin, I didn't know a lot about woodies at the time.

I started the bidding at what seemed like an average price for the old wooden planes in the sale , something like $10. There was this guy who just kept bidding it up against me till I dropped out at some big figure for me, probably $60 or $70. After the sale I spoke to the winning bidder, I seem to remember it might have been Stuart Minuskin, and said he would have happily bid up to $400 or $500.

A couple of years ago I attended a pre-viewing at an auction, saw a box of "tools and stuff" that looked interesting, and put in an absentee bid with a bid range of $10 to $20. Two days later I got a phone call to advise that I had won at my lower bid of $10, so I drove 10 kms each way to pick up my goods and pay the $12 including 20% buyers premium!

A box of junk; nothing useful, or even usable!

I wish someone had outbid me!

Even worse feeling is looking for planes for MONTHS second hand, giving up and buying them new only to have them listed a week later. Saw them as they were posted yesterday, could have snapped up both the #4 and #5 yesterday for less than I paid for my #5 new.

Hi SW. I have been looking for a #7 plane for a few years now. When I began the search they sold on eBay for around $70. This was higher than my self opposed limit and so I didn't purchase one. Now they generally go for $150+. If I only .........

This was posted (by me) back in 2017 in the Antique & Vintage Machinery section:

So I was delighted when one showed up on Trademe last week (they’re not that common). Unfortunately the auction finish clashed with work. I put on a token bid – that was soon passed. A second token bid just before work yesterday (just to test the waters) showed an auto-bid in place. Then yesterday afternoon, during my meal break, I put on a serious bid – a round figure, plus 5 cents. Huh, for two hours I was the lead bidder by that 5 cents.

I was on a train home when the auction finished. I’m not much good with a smart phone (the damned thing is smarter than me ), but I managed to figure out how to follow the auction on my phone. I was soon outbid, but I figured out how to place a bid. Outbid again and another bid from me, Outbid again but I thought I might be wearing down the other bidder – when we went into a tunnel and I lost the connection .

By the time we emerged and I re-established a connection, the auction had ended – I’d lost ! Curses.
The story has a happy ending though. I came across another identical buzzer a couple of months later and picked it up much cheaper. I must finish putting it back together one day soon... .

    Cheers, Vann.

I have somehow managed to end up with three of them. No, wait there are actually four. Next time you’re in South Africa, save some space in your luggage and I’m sure we can come to some arrangement. And my preferred jointer is my #8.

I’m not a good contributor to this thread - I’ve been lucky and have picked up more than what I need tool wise. I’m very patient though, some things have literally taken me years to find, but usually something eventually pops up.
