I have had others ask the same question, it would be a simple task to make we just laser cut them from Stainless Steel so it would not rust, and then have it surface ground. I was thinking of using the the Design that the Paul Williams straight edges, with the holes in them so they can be hung up.

The sizes proposed was 300, 600, and 900 mm.

It would be easy, in most part.

It would be best kept to a separate order.

    TS

I have a 19mm (3/4") HNT shoulder plane. I will measure up the blade this weekend and send through dimensions. I'd also be interested in a straight edge.

    Any one else?

Spoke to John at Rippon, he just got the email and has not had time to make a quote for us. I will call him back on Tuesday next week.

Russell at Wigley engineering (laser cutters) also has not time to look at making a quote. I will call him back on Tuesday next week.

Harry I have recorded your Shoulder plane option.

I've attached the dimensions for the 3/4" HNT shoulder plane blade, which is 4.5mm thick. Please note that this blade has been sharpened a few times, so the currently 24mm blade length may originally have been 25mm (or 1").

I got a quote for waterjet cutting for the plane blades from waterjet solutions. They are asking $5.56 plus gst for the 4 mm blades and $8.20 plus gst for the 6 mm blades.

The laser guys said they could not cut the small 3 mm hole for the heat treating hook. We would need to make the hole 7 mm if we used the laser. Laser would be cheaper, the waterjet, but we would have to drill the hole ourselves.

    See attached quote.

The waterjet people, did not say how full the sheet was, so I will need to call them to confirm how much space is left.

I will talk to Rippon tomorrow and then we will have a good idea about were the prices are.

All that remains is the heat treater, they charge $14 per Kg.

    Space Left on the Sheet

At this point we have only 48 blades allocated to the 4.5 plate and 83 blades for the 7 mm plate. So we have tons of space left. Remember that we can only start the production run when we have filled the sheet. I will do the maths tonight to get more exact numbers.

    Surface Grinding Cost

I just got of the phone from John at Rippon, he wants $32 for surface grinding the top and bottom faces flat and parallel, and for the bevel ground to 25º.

The job will be a two step process. Firstly he will take the bulk of the material of use the milling machine, bringing the blades down from 4.5 mm to 4.3 mm and from 7 mm to 6.3 mm.

The blades will then get heat treated, before being returned to him, for surface grinding down to 4 mm and 6 mm. It is is not viable for him to grind of a whole 1 mm from fully hardened steel and it would be more expensive for us.

John is charging us a flat rate of $32 regardless of the size of the blade. He says the thicker and the longer the blade the be more work, compared to the thinner or shorter blades, with $32 being the average cost overall for all blades.

    Price of The Steel

The reason why we are using 4.5 and 7 mm M2 plate is because that is all we can get from Bohler.

The steel plate from Bohler cost's

    • 4.5 mm Plate == 1450.58 plus GST == 1595.638 inc GST
    • 7 mm Plate == 2264.32. plus GST == 2490.752 inc GST

    Manufacturing Cost

I am not going to charge different amount for different sized blades, because I only charge what ever it cost's me to get them made for us. Also different prices will be a nightmare to administer. It keeps everything simple if we keep pricing as simple as possible. The projected cost's outlined below are almost dead on the average for what I projected at the beginning of this thread. So we are doing well.

The manufacturing cost per 4 mm thick blade as follows:

    $05 M2 Steel
    $32 For the Surface Grinding
    $03 Heat Treating
    $05.56 Waterjet
    -------------------
    $45.56 plus GST
    -------------------

The manufacturing cost per 6 mm thick blade as follows:

    $10 M2 Steel
    $32 For the Surface Grinding
    $03 Heat Treating
    $08.20 Waterjet
    -------------------
    $53.20 plus GST
    -------------------

If you are not getting bevels ground on your plane blades, then you will save $5 per plane blade, however this is super tuff M2, and this is not recommended for most people.

As per usual there will be a 3% safety margin, to cover any unforeseen problems. Which works out $1.40 for a 4 mm blade and $1.60 for the 6 mm blades.

This brings the final cost of the $47 for the 4 mm blade and $55 for the 6 mm blade. It makes life simpler if we round thing to the nearest dollar.

    Getting A Better Price

I will chase up a few more 3rd party manufactures, to see if we can save of a few dollars. I suspect that we can get a better price on the waterjet.

    Hi Helmut,

Thanks for your continued hard work.

I'll do a bit to fill a bit more of the sheet - can you add one 50 x 6 x 150mm blade to my order please.

I'm happy to go with option 1 or 4 as seems to be the case with most others.

    Regards,
    Will

Hi Will I have added you to he list.

We have tones of space, in fact we have so much a have open up the sheet for special blades.

    Woodwould has asked for a 50 x 6 x 200 skew miter blade and a Spier's smoother blade at 54 x 4 x 180 mm. See drawings:

    Attachment 148646

    Attachment 148647

I know lots have people have been waiting a long time for this order to get of the ground. Unfortunately I can only buy the steel in sheet form, an offer these range o sizes, so we need to fill a sheet. I estimate that we can still have space to double the numbers of orders, especially on the 4 mm sheet.

Here is a list of Blades that we have up for grabs:

    • 19 mm Shoulder Plane Blade (HNT/Hock Style)
    • 25 mm Shoulder Plane Blade (HNT/Hock Style)
    • 32 mm Shoulder Plane Blade (HNT/Hock Style)

    • 15 x 4 x 60
    • 25 x 4 x 80
    • 30 x 4 x 80
    • 40 x 4 x 50
    • 40 x 4 x 100
    • 40 x 4 x 200
    • 50 x 4 x 60
    • 50 x 4 x 100
    • 50 x 4 x 150

    • 30 x 6 x 80
    • 40 x 6 x 100
    • 40 x 6 x 150
    • 50 x 6 x 100
    • 50 x 6 x 150
    • 50 x 6 x 200
    • 60 x 6 x 100
    • 60 x 6 x 150
    • 60 x 6 x 200

    • 50 x 6 x 200 Skew Miter
    • 54 x 4 x 180 Spiers Smoother
    • 2-1/4" Blade for the Veritas Bevel Up Smoother, Jack, and Jointer

    Helmut,

Given that many of the PMs I sent you don't seem to get through (?), I'm not even sure if I'm down for any items from either plane blade order.....

If I am, please could you cancel any items (from either order) that I was down for?

    Thanks
