Plane Blades
Hi Helmut
Thanks for addding me to the list. Looking forward to getting the blades. Have you got any idea as to when they might be ready?
Can't wait to get stuck into making the planes. I will have a go at using kiln dried redgum.
Has anybody used this timber for planes? It shoud be stable enough for the job I just hope it is hard enough.
The other question I have is: can anybody tell me how to attach a photo to a new thread?
Fritz

Hi Fritz
We are almost finished on the chisels order, and as soon as the chisels are done, I would like the ball rolling on the plane blades. I am need of some smaller size blades for a course project. So I would like to get the plane blades done asap in the new year.
As for red gum for planes, it is no a good choice because it is so unstable it will never be stable or flat. There was a guy who tried it on the forum and he had no luck with it.
We have still tones of space left on both sheets.

Hi TS
If you still have spare material left I'd like to put my name down for two blades:
1 off 50 x 6 x 150 mm
1 off 60 x 6 x 100 mm
Many thanks

Hi TS,
Just wondering what actual grade of M2 steel this and the last batch of blades were. As if i remember my text M2 or at least some grades are considered High speed steel and dont lose their temper if they get blued when grinding.
Does this steel lose its temper when blued. - Just curious.
So when do you depart town or maybe you already have?
Thanks,
Steve

M2 is an ISO standard, it is my understanding that all M2 steel is HSS due to its chemical composition. The technical data sheet for the M2 can be found here.
The heat treat is a triple salt furnace to RC 63 -64 this will ensure the steels classification as HSS in combination with its chemical composition.
The blade should therefore not lose their temper even if blued.

Krenov/Hock Plane Blades
I have been asked if we could make some Krenov/Hock style blades. At this point I am looking to have the blades being made in 4.5 mm thick M2, and in 25 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm widths with a 3 mm cap iron this would bring to about 7 mm total making it comparable to the Krenov/Hock blades.
I have been working on the CAD file. The blade is based on what I can gather online.
The blades are 90 mm long. The slot is 4 mm wide and 24 mm long. This means the blade can be ground down 24 mm before the cap iron will overshoot the blade. The distance the cap iron can move is limited by the plane body, that is why I illustrated "The Blades Relatonship between plane body and the bed angles".
If anyone has a hock blade and they are able to provide dimensions for comparison, it would be much appreciated.

Wooden Plane Blades
G'day Helmut
Please find attached details of several sizes of Hock Blades and one Fink Blade, all blades are 3/16" thick. The Cap Iron screw shown fits all blades except the Fink, which has a 3/16" round head countersink screw and a plastic cup washer. I was a bit sceptical on the latter, but the washer actually works well and makes it simpler to align the cap iron and blade edges. All measurements I have shown are in millimetres although the blades are all imperial.

Stanley Blades
Hi Helmut
I am not sure if I am using the right thread but I try it any way.
I think some where along the way I saw on the forum some mention of plane blades for metal woodplanes(Stanley- Record ) Are you making any of this? If you are, would you mind letting me know how I find them on the forum.
Looking forward hearing from you.
Regards Fix it Fritz

- 2"" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
- 2 1/4" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
- 2 3/8" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
- 2 5/8" Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
- 2 1/8" Rebate Blade For Stanley/Record Bench Plane
- Block Plane Blade for a #102 Block Plane
- Block Plane Blade for a #103 Block Plane
- 2-1/8" Spokeshave Blade

Working of the measurements provided by basilg, I have draw up the following CAD files for the Hock/Krenov Style plane blades.
I have made the widths imperial so that in 20 plus years if the blades is worn out, then it should be reasonable easy to get replacement blades for the plane body.
The blades will also have the tombstone motif, which I have not added in yet.
