    Default Who Made This'n?

I recently bought this nice corner borer locally. I've tried to ID the maker but no joy.
Written around the centre of the chuck shell is "patent applied for". Other than that nothing else I can see.
The thumbscrew on the crank handle allows you to reduce the sweep, the one on the collar of the support handle lets you rotate the SH to the other side. The wingnut on the SH lets you remove it altogether.
The SH is not original but a fairly old looking replacement.
    Hoping someone may recognise it.
    Regards,
    Geoff.

It looks like a Stephen McClellan design.

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your time, I think you're spot on with Stephen McClellan, do you have any other info on him?
    Regards,
    Geoff.

You can read a little about McClellan and see pictures of his braces here.

His other drill related patests are:

    714,939
    807,847
    976,131
    1,249,794

He had some unrelated patents for umbrellas, sash fasteners, motors, etc.

The Metal Worker Magazine - 1898 Has a drawing for the Small McClellan Universal Brace.
Carpentry and Building 1898 has similar info.

    Hi Jeff,
The chuck on my brace seems true to the drawing and description contained in Pat No 661,419, so perhaps the "patent applied for" is for the chuck only.
It's easy to see that this brace would be easier to use if it had the original "rest rod" attached instead of the substituted handle as in my case.
I might come across the genuine article one day.
    Regards,
    Geoff.
