Old Titan chisels
I have a handful of old Titan chisels which I am restoring. I used a brew of molasses and water to shuck off the rust and now the real work begins.
These are registered chisels: wooden handles and a metal ferrule at the top to prevent mushrooming under mallet blows.
Good people, some of these chisels have lost their ferrules. Does anyone know where some might be purchased? I really need a few to complete the refurbishments.
I shall be grateful for any advice.
Regards,
Kevin.

Last time I fixed a chisel up for a friend I went down to my local plumbing supplier and bought a length of brass pipe (not steel or copper ) in the correct diameter and cut ferrules from the end. I believe Derek and others have used the brass "olives" that are used in plumbing compression fittings and are available from the same source.

I purchased some mild steel tube from a steel supplier. Was only $2.00 for a 30cm length. Cut it with a pipe cutter then file or ream the burr.

I watch out for kirbside rubbish, old stair rods (which are often hollow), towel rails, besides buying steel and brass tube new and secondhand.
Cheers

Yes. Or if you want to go flash, this guy sells hard brass ferrules in a range of diameters and lengths. Enter 'ferrule' in the search box.
Sorry, just reread your post. AFAIK what you're talking about is hoops, and that source may not have ferrules short enough. Have a browse anyway.Last edited by rsser; 29th June 2010 at 07:27 PM. Reason: addition

Hi Ern,
Thanks for your reply about the ferrules for chisels.
I looked up my old high school woodwork book and and you're right - ferrules aren't what I want at all. Hoops are what is needed.
I clicked on your link and I reckon that I'll be able to fashion some hoops from the ferrules shown.
Thanks again for your time.
Regards,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,
Are you intending ro restore to original? If you get stuck with finding top hoops in steel, send me a PM with the measurment and I'll see if I have any pipe in that size.
Cheers!

True! I did ask on another thread if anbody had, or knew of somebody reproducing the decals. Anyone? I've a small pile that I've picked up over the few years which would benefit from some cosmetic surgery (to slow the growith, I've set a limit of no more than $2.50 per chisel, and am still averaging about two a month).

Ah, that was you. The fleeting world of internet forums.
I guess if Kevin has done the rust treatment and is looking for hoops prob he'll be turning new handles as well in which case it isn't a restoration job. Might as well opt for a design that suits his hands and uses.
Any case, my original Titans have steel hoops 15mm wide except for the gouge which has a narrow hoop like a Berg.Cheers, Ern

Probably, although I don't know if that question has been asked by others too!
And yes, mine will be getting new handles. We'll wait to see how Kevin goes with his. 15mm external?

Well, not too long ago there was a thread here on chisel handle profiles. Might be of interest to you.
15mm width (or length, depending in how you look at it), not OD. Can measure that if you're interested. Mine seem consistent but Titans were made for a long time.Cheers, Ern
