Tool Collecting
Just a quick heads-up for anyone interested in collecting hand tools.
Next week, on the ABC programme - Collectors - 8:00pm on Friday, there will be a feature on Collecting old woodworking hand tools.
There was a short preview on tonight's show.
I have sometimes wondered if a new section could be added to this Board to cover Tool Collecting.
What do you think?

Thought that's what many of the forums were already about ;-}

Collectors
You're right Ern - in as much as many woodies use the Hand Tools and Machinery section to display their tools or to ask questions, or simply to get or give an opinion.
I'm not much into machinery, so I trawl through this section for hand tool posts.
The thought that I had, was that hand tool collectors might discover who else does or doesn't collect, if there was a dedicated forum.
I get the impression that some users of the forum are collectors in one way or another - eg planes and/or chisels and/or saws etc but are reluctant to admit it in this forum.
Some people only buy/acquire tools that they intend to use, others buy/acquire tools that they might use one day, while others buy/acquire tools that they will never use, but simply like the look and feel of them. Are they all collectors?
If there was a dedicated forum, more "collectors" might participate in it.
What do others think?
Regards

Good point, and I was being flip.
As a tool user I have to say I begrudge bidding against collectors on ebay and so am not in a frame of mind to aid their efforts. Perfectly selfish point of view and no more virtuous than collectors' I'm sure.
Equally and contradictorily, I have my preferences for old chisels for example and like to keep to two types and that makes me a kind of collector too I guessCheers, Ern

I'm still relatively new to the whole woodwork thing. But I've found I have a definite inclination to collect tools - something I have to fight quite hard to quell because I can't afford the money or the space. I intend to use my hand tools, but also would like to develop (slowly and cheaply - the old fashioned way) a small collection of planes and chisels. So far I'm doing well but lack the time and space to complete the restoration efforts. I'm working on that though.
I regularly watch the Collectors and noted their program this Friday. Hans Brunner is also having an auction this Sunday at Camden. The catalogue is online at his site.Bob C.
Never give up.

Not meaning to be flip, but I think Ern's first post was actually pretty accurate. A separate section for collecting would present the dilemma for posters about which section to place messages: "collecting" or a section specific to the tool. Similarly, viewers would have to scan both sections for latest info. I have several tools that are more for collecting than use, especially after strenuous restoration, but I still reserve the option of using them if the situation demands.
A good idea, but not a great idea.

I think its agreat idea .
I have a growing collection that are all users ,my favourites are handsaws (mainly old back saws ) planes and chisels.
I have a few old squares , adjustable bevels and hand drills too .
I enjoy using them after restoration.
A forum on this subject would be ideal.

Very nice. They could have spent the entire half hour of the show, showing his tools, not 5 minutes.
