Any good tool shops in Melbourne northern subs?
I need to kit up with some basic but good quality stuff...
combination square
straight edge
steel rule
marking knife
cutting gauge
a few chisels
calipers
tape measure
geometry compass...
and so on.
Tried carbatec on the weekend, but they were shut by the time I got there and it's total opposite from where I am.
Anyone recommend somewhere on the northern side with good range of quality stuff at reasonable price?
Cheers, -Jon

I'm in the same predicament as you, there is next to nothing in the northern suburbs and I'm almost sick of travelling over 2 hours both ways to the southern suburbs. Anyway, rant over. Have you tried Woodworking Machinery in Preston? Limited stock, reasonable price and a Carbatec reseller. Worth a try.

How about Power Tool Specialists in Carlton? I have found them to be very competitive.

Total Tools in Tullamarine (Garden Dve ??) and Preston (Cr Bell St & Chifley Dve) have a good range. Cannot comment on prices as I have not needed to buy tools recently.

Jon, for those std carpenter's tools I'd look at a general tool supplies place. There's one on Newlands Rd Coburg; also one on the cnr of Chifley and Bell Sts. A bit closer to you would be Biz Buzz (Mitre 10), High St., Thornbury. The straight edge and marking knife might be harder to source from them however.
Cheers, Ern

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I'll check out some of those local shops to see what they have.
I don't support Bunnings if I can help it because I don't like the way they do business, specifically, I don't like that the majority of their products are disposable. False economy!
