    Default Triangular files

    Hi..

Thought i would try my hand at saw sharpening.. After building myself a saw vice i went in search of the appropriate sized files.
Not so easy !..I'm having trouble finding (in Brissie) a 7" Reg taper as well as 4" and 5" Double extra slim taper files.
I can order in the 5" DEST , but i must buy 10 of them !.. around $80.

Also asked about Auger bit files.. but it seems that no one are stocking these either and are no longer listed by Nicholson.

    G'Day Ken,
Have a look in the Bakers catalogue on the link below.
They are the same a Blackwoods.
    Both large industry engineering suppliers.
    Hope that's some help.
    Cheers, Crowie.

The Australian branch of Lie Nielsen sell individual triangular files in a range of sizes for sharpening saws here

I suggest that you give the LN folk in Adelaide a 'phone call or email - I have always found them to be very helpful.

I bought a couple of 4 inch Double Extra Slim Taper just recently. These have very small shanks and, while the tiny brand name stamped in them is very hard to read even with a strong magnifying glass (it appears to be NICHOLSON, in a circle around two crossed files), the stamp Made in Mexico (also in a circle around two crossed files) is quite clear.

So far, they seem to be a good file - well made and quite 'bitey' for their size.

    I hope this helps,

    Cheerio!

A three square file is not the same as a saw sharpening file. Saw files have rounded corners with teeth on them to make the gullets slightly rounded and stronger. A three square file has sharp corners which could possibly lead to cracking a saw plate through the bottom of a gullet.

Kenny - if you ever find a source of decent quality small files in Brissie, let me know - I've been looking a long time, but virtually no-one carries small files any more.... The files I bought from LN a few months ago are Swiss (Grobert) and are good, but see below.

Crowie - I would not recommend any of the 'three-square' files in the link you posted, but if you go to the heading above ("saw files") there are some suitable files listed. However, the finest they list (4" EST) is not suitable for saws with more than about 15 tpi

While what Mike says about sharp corners is essentially true, and should be taken into account with larger teeth, you won't have to worry about too-sharp gullets on smaller teeth. The saw files we can get now seem to have much more rounded corners than of old, size for size, and that results in all gullet & little teeth in the smaller tooth sizes (>15 tpi). I recently switched to needle files for saws with more than 15 tpi. While these are "three-square" files and have 'sharp' corners, they are in fact, slightly rounded, and make perfect gullets for sizes from about 15 tpi up to 24 tpi, (which is the smallest practical unit I can deal with!). These files are available from various jewellers suppliers (AJS will mail-order, or you can visit their showroom at 226 Albert st.). The files AJS carry are Swiss & of good quality. Get the #4 cut (finest) for sharpening. At $12 each, they are not cheap, but you will get quite a few sharpenings out of ech file, so for the average saw user, not a huge expenditure.....

    Cheers,
    IW

I would concur with Ian that in the finer teeth it makes little difference

I have found slim and extra slim in all lengths saw sharpening files at Bunnings in Darwin ,I bought quite a few and have them stashed just incase they dont have them again.
All are Nicholson and come with red plastic handles fitted.
