Ahhhh...OK, I'll call Terry Gordon tomorrow and give him the bad news....
I did once get to try someone else's fettled Stanley #7 with the corrugated sole, and it was the nicest jointer plane I've ever used. Minimal friction, even with no wax on the sole. When it came time to buy my own jointer I'm afraid the "cost vs. amount of use" didn't stack up, and I bought a Woodriver #7 instead. Very happy with it, but I must admit its good for building up the arm muscles compared to a wooden plane.

Derek
There is a thread I started back in June 2009 on a Krenov style jointer I made with a similar shaped rear handle to that shown by Yeung Chan, with the addition of a carved thumb hold. I prefer a hold as close to the back of the blade, and as low as possible the best for me.

Very interesting thread. Can I make a left field suggestion? Why not shape an assymetrical handle/knob that is suited for your hand and how you like to hold a plane? Given that you feel that the handle raises the centre of effort too high, I was thinking of a "protrusion" rather than a handle - I'm envisaging something that enables you to lodge the web of your hand behind it, and allows you to rest the first 2 fingers of your right hand on the top of the plane with the last two fingers on the side. This would mean that your thumb is left of centre or even off to the left of the plane body, and I'm envisaging a contoured lump that supports the thumb, rather than just letting it rest on the plane body. Strikes me that you want your hand as low as possible, and as close as possible to the back of the blade. The Yeung Chan handle looks too symmetrical (and too attractive) to achieve what I have in mind, but it is on the right track. The solution I'm thinking of wouldn't be pretty but would be functional (if it works the way I'm thinking it would).
Not sure that makes any sense to anyone but me...Bob C.
Never give up.
