    Default Tutor Needed

    Hi there,
    I'm new to this forum.

I am having trouble grasping sharpening techniques for knives, chisels, planes etc.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out through a one-on-one in person session.
    I live in Bentleigh Melbourne,
Am happy to pay $60 per hour, negotiable.

    Would really appreciate the assistance.

    Kind regards
    Ronnie

I'm a bit far away to be a tutor (approx 12000 miles).
If you can't find anyone I suggest you search online for articles about "scary sharp".
This helped me a lot when I was learning to sharpen and it's a cheap way to get planes and chisels to an adequate level of sharpness. Basically it's wet and dry paper on glass or tile together with a honing guide.

Once you know what sharp feels like you will have a better understanding of all the host of different techniques you can read about online plus you will have a standard to judge against.

Hope you progress well, having sharp tools makes such a difference.

    Regards

    Jim

I would be happy to teach but regrettably I am in Gippsland.

Many woodworking schools run short courses on sharpening and basic woodworking. Here is a selection in the Melbourne area.

    Melbourne School of Fine Woodworking
    Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking
    The Shed
    Contact — School of Wood
    Victorian School of Woodcraft
    https://vwa.org.au

    Hope they can help.

    Thank you

I've looked some of them up, only problem is that some course dates are quite a while away/ not in my 5km radius/ don't specifically teach sharpening.

I'll keep looking though, thank you!

So I have whetstones, a 300; 1000; and 6000 grit. As well as a leather strop.

Soaking them. Then running the blade across the stone on both sides at approx 20 Degree angle.

I can send pictures of it shortly.

Don't worry too much it is easy to sharpen most edges. I could show you the easy way to sharpen. As soon as we can get out of jail you can come up an watch and try with my gear. I am in Emerald not far from you.

I'm in Ashburton, 9Km from Bentleigh. Happy to help when we are free to accept visitors.
In the meantime, I'm happy to show you my sharpening set up online, and we can go from there on how you can adapt it to your own setup.
    PM if you're keen.

I'd been keen in watching such a demo, if that is possible?
