    Default unknown cast piece? accessory?

Can anyone identify this bit of steel? It is cast and bears the numbers 14812 on the flat side (the side in the first pic) of this. I have no idea which side is the top bottom or sides..... I found this bit in an old Stanley 78 rebate plane box. The plane and usual accessories are in great shape, the plane even still has a Stanley tag on it. This mystery bit looks to have been painted but not sure. I will hopefully be posting photos unless my computer disagrees. Any ideas or attempted IDs would be much appreciated.

Hi. I don't recognise it. It's not from any plane I've ever owned or seen pictures of.

Hopefully someone here will be able to identify it.

    Cheers, Vann.

just a thought, it wouldn't be the first time a part from something else "migrated" into a handy other box only to be forgotten about until the new owner wonders what he got.

my thoughts exactly TT... i am almost sure it is not for the plane which lived in the box. But knowing the nature of the bloke who owned the plane previously i am very sure it is a woodworking item i will investigate the surrounds of where i found the box next week and hopefully solve this mystery..... and hopefully find some more tools to aid my sawdust obsession.
