    Default An unusual bench

    Hello folks.

Saw this today and it piqued my interest.

    http://www.longbarn.com.au/industrial.html

It's the small workbench about 1/3 down the page. Very "Scandinavian" looking like the Tage Frid or Frank Klausz (not a Scandanavian) bench. No more than 4' long, tail vice missing, wooden shoulder vice (no cheek plate) all on a cast iron base. The proprietor couldn't tell me a great deal about it. I gave it a good crawl around and found no marks. My guesses were school bench or perhaps a naval or at least maritime of some description carpenters bench on a small vessel.

The price for this less than complete piece curtailed any desire to take it home for further examination.

    Any ideas?

    Cheerio,
    Virg.

For that price you can source your own timber and build a decent bench.

From what the kind lady at the shop was saying the clientele of her establishment don't seem to be interested in workbenches per se. She said that it would look great in the kitchen or as a side table in a hall. She also said that some woodworking types actually like to take these lovely old things back out into the shed. Heavens!!

    Cheers,
    Virg.

At that price, the least she could do...would be to put a "U" bolt over the vice handle, or a long screw through it, fixing it back to the bench horizontally. Then and throw a tea towel over it..... like it's meant to have in the kitchen...

    Regards,
    Peter
