George Smithwick is an Aussie Cooper . He does courses on Bucket making sometimes with the Lost trades group I think.

I didn't actually go on a search until I found an answer mission on this.

I was reading jpdv's thread on Coopering and Rum in General woodwork and I was searching the net for Oak Vats and Barrels related to Bundaberg Rum. I pressed the images tab and there in front of me amongst all the Oak Coopered containers ( none from Bundaberg) was that image of the curved blade. I said out loud "your Kidding!" It just fell into my lap

Then I remembered the George Smithwick Youtube video and that he had mentioned some old tools so I went and had another look at that.

Ive seen them as well over the years Chief but I had never noticed that any of them had a curved blade like that.

Hi CT. Yes, same guy, same price and same manufacturer! I asked him about the blade, and he sent me some photos of gutter planes but they had simple curved blades (like a moulding plane - just bigger). I wonder if he could ask for more if he knew what he was actually selling.

Depends how many coopers (or would-be coopers) are out there...

Some tools can be useful across several trades, but coopers' tools tend to be pretty specific to their business & have little application elsewhere. I wouldn't have a clue about making a cheve (my father did own a 1924 Chev., which I'd have a few more clues about

), but I assume the bed & wedge are shaped to fit the blade? I also assume you would need to fine-tune the bed & wedge for each blade as no two would be identical.

Hmm, you are going to have some fun researching & preparing for the up-coming build....
