Unusual plane blade?
Hi all. Please see below for a photo of one of my Christmas presents. I bought this with the intention of making a wooden body to house it. Does anyone have any idea of its original purpose? I messaged the seller, and he suggested a gutter plane, but the only examples I can find online have a simple radiused blade, not a gouge like profile. Thanks, and I hope Happy Christmases were had by all.

Interesting blade there MA.
First thing I thought was it may be a blade that has been re heated and shaped for some reason.
Id try sharpening it and see if it holds an edge first.
The ground bevel on the back looks to have the oxidized scale from a re heat as well possibly.
I cant think of how it could work in a plane body.
It may work as a chisel with a hammer or mallet for shaping hollow seats or something like that ?

Crack on the back suggests someone bent it over a form forging it for one off use.

And with an out-cannel bevel, I wonder if that use was to be for a hand-adze? But fixing it solidly to a handle would've been a challenge. Unless they just bound it to the handle with kangaroo sinew & grass-tree gum? (A pretty effective method, I believe!)
Yeah, I really have no idea either....

I think Ian, Rob & David might have it; someone wanted to make a curved bladed adze on the cheap so they took a plane iron and bent it into a curve using some heat, but not enough to prevent it cracking. Subsequently they found that mounting it securely was pretty much impossible so it languished on a shelf before being sold as part of a tool bundle or maybe a deceased estate.

I just came across this.
A Coopers curved Cheve Iron.
And there is a Cheve plane. Or a Cheve?

Found in here.
Cooper’s Tools – William Marples and Sons, Ltd.
Id say with a guess its for shaping the Chime.

My guess was wrong.
George Smithwick explains it here.
He says its for the part under the chime that takes the top. Before the groove is put in that holds the top.

Thanks Rob. This is great info. I had in mind building something for "scalloping" out wood. If that video is of an Australian Cooper then I think I have seen it before but I will watch again much more closely. Much appreciated .

I just found this online. Great photos of the way the plane is made
Coopers Chiv Plane by ATKIN & SONS with Broad Arrow *SOLD*
I assumed some things but great to see how it is actually done

Another mystery solved!
Good sleuthing, Rob - another tool name to add to the list that probably includes dozens I don't yet know exist or existed!
Coopering is one activity I have no desire to become involved in, but I'm very grateful when I sip my occasional little indulgence before the fire on a cold night that there are still coopers....
Cheers,IW

It looks like an interesting plane making is coming up. I will watch with interest. [emoji6]

Excellent work Rob;
I’m ashamed to say I’ve seen cheves at distilleries and cooperages, watched that video several times over the years and have the Marples website in my “favourites”.. and still missed the connection…
