    Default Unwitting collector of ploughs.

So I decided I needed a plough for draw sides and stuff, and couldn’t really justify the Veritas at the moment, so I went and found a great user Record 050. Then a few days later I saw advertised locally an ‘unmarked plough’. I did some research and thought it was probably a Stanley 43 type 2 in good nick. I got it for 140 so felt pretty happy with it. It’s missing all but one blade, and a few other minor things but still very happy. Then a couple days later, a ‘parts Stanley 45’ turned up locally for 60 so I bought that too. It has most of the blades and nickers etc, but is missing the rods and probably a few other things, as well as most of the nickel plating. If I get keen though, I could probably turn it into a user. Never wanted a 45, but there you go.
What I’d really like is a set of the skew blades for the 43 but even a repro set are hard to find and about 250US so probably no time soon.

    Regards

I think your 43 is actually a 46 and there's a thread on this forum about how I made a set of skew blades for a Stanley 46.
With a hacksaw, file and a bit of tool steel it's not too difficult and well worth the effort.

As Jim says, making a set of blades could be a far cheaper option. His thread is here.

A 75 x 500 piece of gauge plate of the right thickness will set you back around $60 (haven't bought any for a couple of years so inflation & the bouncy $ may have added a bit). I get mine from here, they have both metric & Imperial thicknesses & have always been helpful & prompt.

Heat-treating small blades is pretty easy. I'm in the process of making a "coffee can" furnace so I can handle larger blades - look up "coffee can furnace" or "coffee can forge" for instructions.

So as well as becoming an accidental collector of ploughs, you're about to become an accidental blacksmith........

    Cheers,

$140 for a #46 even with only one blade is pretty good. They are very hard to find
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Yes, 46 sorry. Yes, I was more than happy with the price and it is in really good condition.

Blacksmithing here I come. Thanks for the advice guys, and for finding the threads. Now all I need to do is find the time...I am still to finish a chest of drawers that has been ongoing for almost 5 years. Other projects have been completed though so I don't feel too terrible about it, except for the loss of floor space.
