Default Using the Mujinfang style planes- push or pull

Somewhere recently I saw a picture of a Japanese woodworker using a wooden block plane and pulling it toward him rather than pushing it.
Is this the reason for the cross bar that is fitted to some of the planes.
Excuse the ignorance of this question, I just find these planes fascinating

I've been spending alot of time perving at the HNT Gordon website lately and found this HNT Gordon - Smoothing and Trying Plane Hand Grip. Looks like you can do both.

I have a muji and it can be used either way. I use the cross bar when pulling only. So far not tried it on a shooting board but seeing that " how to" I reckon it should be ok for that too. Push it the same as any wooden smoother.
For a cheap plane it works surprisingly well
