    Default VCI Paper for Hand Tools

    Does anyone out there have an opinion on using VCI paper for long term protection of handtools? Good/bad effective or not?

    I thought it might be a good idea to protect my antique NIB/MIB planes especially in the Auckland climate. Wax paper only seems to encourage sweating, even with silica packs.

    I called up a local industrial supplier but he can only sell 200m rolls of the stuff. Anyone know where I could get some small amounts of it?

    Would be nice if all the woodworking places could sell small packs of it as it'll be very convenient when buying those big ticket items that you don't use very often.

    Perhaps what you need are "plane socks" by Lie Nielson

    Hi everyone;

    What I meant is that I can't find anyone who is readily able to sell SMALL and convenient amounts of VCI (just a few sq metres of it). I don't own a rolling mill or have a million dollar tool collection!

    The amounts you can get it in will be more than enough to paper your house or workshop - imagine that.

    Starrett uses Daubert VCI paper since they make tools that are worth protecting. It would be nice to line toolboxes/sheves or drawers with it to protect all your tools as well.

    I though about plane socks many years ago but I have too many planes and other tools to go down that path. Also, do they contain silica or SILICONE? I don't think a plane sock will accomodate a combination plane, big lathe chucks, saws or indexing tables though.

    Well it's not VCI paper, but near enough. You can get VCI generators or VCI foam packs from your local RS Components outlet. No need to smear oils or spray stuff all over your valuables!

    BTW I contacted a couple of places about VCI paper; MIK said they couldn't get any in because of the volume requirement, but both Woodcraft & LV&V said they would consider it and passed it on to their marketing department. I guess it's because I mentioned that FWW #164 commented on its use in toolboxes.
    We'll have to wait and see.

    Then again, if you don't mind getting stuff from overseas just go to the LN website for some.
