Gee Tom ... thanks for the very kind words.

I must say that I relished the opportunity to write a review of dovetail saws. Every time I write an article it becomes a learning experience for me, and this one certainly was that. I hope others find it the same.

Wait till you see the next saw I review! (Keep an eye out for the preview).

    Regards from Perth

    Hi Derek,

I was going to reply on woodnet, but seeing as how Scribbly has done the honours, I'll reply here.

First, congratulations on an excellent and thorough review, trying to encompass all the variables in sawing is a near impossible task, I think you've covered all of them admirably.

I liked the discussion on sawing styles, different types and thicknesses of wood affected the performance.

I would perhaps have liked to see some comment on the price, as I think the Veritas really stands out as good value for money. You need to spend at least twice as much to get comparable quality. The real competitor in that price bracket would perhaps be Pax, Spear&Jackson, etc.. and I think I can guess how that comparison would go.

Nice review, a pleasure to read.

    Regards
    Ray

I agree with all above, Derek, and thank you for a wonderful review, clearly written and covering so much that I did not know.

    Hi Ray

    You raise an interesting issue.

I never mention actual prices in my reviews/articles, but there is always a link to the manufacturer's website where the price can be found. The reason for this is that I do not want the review/article to be perceived as an advert for the tool. There is a thin line between illustrating the relevance of a tool and selling the tool.

In this review I did refer to the cost, noting that Veritas had developed the design to maximise performance and minimise price, and that the latter is half that of the premium saws.

In the end it is for the reader to make up their own mind about value-for-money.

    What do you think?

    Regards from Perth

I agree with your approach, your reviews have integrity and refreshing lack of commercialism, and strong educational bias.

In general, to focus on pricing would detract from the general tone. (It's the vibe)

    Hi Derek,

The Article is excellent, I do not own a dovetail saw as yet and it is now at the top of my purchase list after some recent aquisitions.

I know it is a bit off topic but when I visited Carba-Tec last week they had reduced the price for the 14 TPI from $139 to $89 if my memory serves me correct, the only reason that I didn't buy it then and there was I also picked up the Lie-Neilsen dovetail saw

    Hi Derek
Thanks for another great review. Your reviews always seem to be filled with a wealth of pictures and concise decriptions. As a guy who's just getting started, reviews like yours are extremely helpful. I ordered one on the strenth of your review and I have to say they seem to be great value for money when compared to the Lie_Neilson. Can't wait for mine to arrive....

    Regards
    Ken
