Have you had your veritas plough plane updated
I bought a Lee valley veritas small plough plane back in 2014.
As some may be aware there are 2 upgrades since then
1 is the depth stop that can be ordered with another lv purchase
2 is the re machining of the plane body so that the new beading plane blades can be used. If you don't need to make beads then no machining required
has anybody either local or overseas sent the plane body back for machining ?
its $59 usd but this won't be available after August 31
Trick is that the $59 covers the machining and us post only.
So for my plane if I went ahead the first leg for LV is to send empty box to US post address - covered by LV
2nd leg post empty box to AU via third party shipper approx $50-70 AU AUD
3rd leg box goes back again with plane in it approx 70 AUD. via Aus post direct to LV.
4th leg Then send to usa address once machining is finished - covered by LV
5th leg reshipper back to me approx 70 AUD
All up 210 approx AUD not including new beading blades.
A new plane with the beading capacity is $229 USD - approx 310 AUD plus another 90 AUD to get it here. Also the beading blades are $22 usd
The Sydney supplier don't have a solution. At the Sydney show they were unaware of the beading blades or the upgrades.I even pmd Rob Lee on another woodworking forum. I thought that they could bring a few boxes with them on their recent tour.
so it seems my best option is to order something I need from Lee valley and get the improved depth stop only and find a different hand plane beading solution
. The machining is out unless to reduce the cost I can get a copy of the instructions and/ or a previously used box - I would still need to start by purchasing the $59 upgrade. The used box would save 2nd leg from us to au

The question is does Lee Valley have a plan for their overseas buyers? I do not know - have not seen anything advertised.
The other question is whether this mod is critical, that is, a must have. I would do it out of curiosity, but my experience using A Stanley #45 does not inspire confidence in plough beading. The wood must be chosen very carefully - anything that is interlocked grain will tear out (hello, we live in Oz, the land of interlocked grain).
One answer may be that someone arranges a group purchase/modification (Brett?), where the items can be shipped to and fro at a reduced expense.

An overnight response to my email to LV customer service:
"Thank you for your email. We do have a more practical option for our International plough plane customers, given the prohibitive costs of shipping. Instead of sending the empty box for you to return your old plane body back to us, we will send you a new upgraded plane body directly, for you to install yourself. All you need to do is add item # 05P5265 (Upgrade Kit) to your online order as per usual, and also specify in the "Additional Order Notes" whether you need a Right-hand or Left-hand model. We will take care of the rest. The cost is $59 USD. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us"

Don't we all just love dealing with Lee Valley's customer service but to answer your first questions
I've had mine done -- I got it back just over a week ago and then almost immediately jumped on a plane so only had time for a very quick look.
I couldn't see where there had been any fresh machining on the plane body and the revised depth stop looked as though it was an "original" fitment.
Also the turn around time (less than 3 weeks) was very fast for a re-machining job which included surface shipping via the store re-stocking system.
This would equate with a new plane body being supplied.
whilst I don't have the "instructions" with me they are pretty straight forward and I can sort of quote them if anyone is interested.regards from Alberta, Canada
