Default Veritas question for Derek (or Rob !)

I have the Veritas MkII Honing Guide and (as of earlier this week) a new Veritas round spokeshave.

I gather that the MkII guide can handle the spokeshave blade directly, but I cannot find any details of what angle/position settings should be used on the guide to maintain the factory bevel/microbevel when sharpening the blade. Obviously it is desirable to have a reasonable portion of the blade within the clamp to provide stability.

Has anyone tried this combo yet, and if so what settings are needed?

    Cheers

    Hi Mr B

I assume that this is what you are referring to?

Well, I have not used this one myself, but I suspect that the settings for my Stanley #53 will work.

    For a 25 degree bevel ...

    (1) set the Registration Stop on RED 50 degrees

    (2) and set the blade carrier locking knob on the GREEN (#3) button.

Let me know how this works out.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek

    Many thanks Derek !!

I have a big sharpening session ahead of me tomorrow, so I'll give this a try then and report back. Looking forward to trying my new Norton 4000/8000 combo waterstone, which should hopefully make a difference....

    Cheers

or you could try a Veritas Small Blade Holder

Which is what I used before I had a mk2, I haven't had a need to sharpen since so I may try Derek's method too!

    cheers,

    P

    That'll teach me................to read the manual !!!

Tried Derek's suggestion on my MkII guide, but upon inserting the blade from my Veritas spokeshave the angle of dangle was clearly wrong. This is the 'traditional' spokeshave I might add (round flavour), as opposed to that other 'universal' spokeshave also made by Veritas.

I don't know where I got the idea that the blade has a 25 degree bevel, but this was firmly lodged in my mind as I thrashed around trying to find a suitable setting on the MkII guide. Leafing through the manual, I finally found the part that says "The blades for the Veritas Flat and Round Spokeshaves come with a finely ground 30 degree primary bevel and a 35 degree micro-bevel"...........groan.

So, I'm happy to report that these blades can be sharpened on the MkII guide using the standard (2) blade carrier position, and (surprise, surprise) the registration stop set to 30 degrees. By luck or good design (knowing Veritas, I suspect the latter), the blade has sufficient depth to be firmly clamped in this position. The small blade carrier required with the old MkI guide is not needed with the MkII when sharpening these spokeshave blades !!

Does the guide work well though? I'd be interested to see how it goes.
