Help to buy plane for Husband
Hi everyone,
I was hoping that I might be able to receive some advice.
I'm looking to buy a Lie-Nielsen plane for my husband.
He has quite a collection of planes, he picks up old Stanley planes and refurbishes them but he only has one Lie-Nielsen - a no. 4.
He enjoys wood work as a hobby and although he has many tools big and small alike, hand tools are his passion.
He doesn't make anything in particular - he cleans his tools more than he uses them I think.
He does big DIY projects but also likes to make boxes and other smaller items out of good timber.
Any ideas of what to get him would be greatly appreciated - given he has other planes for his DIY type of work I was thinking another lie Nielsen for the work with the nice timbers.
Thanks in advance
K

I think you need to advise a budget range to get a better response to your needs. If money is no issue get a Bresse.

Hi K,
I would recommend a Lie Nielson Low Angle Smoother. If he uses timbers with lots of figure and curly grain this will make his life easier and be a pleasure to use as well.
You can see the low angle planes at the Lie Nielson Web Site. lie-nielson.com
I find it a beautiful plane to use.
Good luck (and Merry Christmas!)
Regards,
Rob

Yes ... depending on budget there is are entire other levels of craftsmanship that may (allegedly) be purchased.
Some examples from the past ...

or indeed antiques in the same direction ...

I'm sure my wife thinks that of me too (and it's probably true
)
.
As he already has a number of old Stanleys, he probably already has most of the common bench planes, so I don't really know what to suggest. The two types of plane I would suggest aren't made by Lie-Nielsen. They are a plough plane or a skew rebate plane (Lee Valley Veritas make them, but if he's a Lie-Nielsen lover he might not appreciate them)
Veritas® Small Plow Plane - Lee Valley Tools
Veritas® Skew Rabbet Plane - Lee Valley Tools
Two suggestions I will make out of the Lie-Nielsen catalogue are their bronze edge plane or their tongue and groove plane.
Bronze Edge Plane, Right Handed, Left Handed
Tongue and Groove Plane
I hope that helps (though I suspect I'm just adding confusion).

Good Morning K
I got a Lie Neilsen low angle jack plane from Henry Eckert in Adelaide about six months ago. It is brilliant, and their prices are very competitive internationally.
Low Angle Jack Plane
In my opinion, Lee Valley (Veritas) stuff is grossly overpriced in Aus, and its not worth the hassles of importing when locally available Lie Neilsen is so well priced. Others will disagree.
The other Lie Neilsen that I lust after, probably more to look at as they are too pretty to use, are the bronze smoothers. Check the sizes carefully as while they are the same size as steel planes of the same number - the No 1 is tiny, real tiny.
Bench Planes
I think he will have a great Christmas!

I got one of these:
Low Angle Adjustable Mouth Block Plane
at the last Woodwork show and it is rapidly becoming my favourite plane.
If he does not already have a block plane then this is what I think you could be looking for.
Cheers

If he does not have a shoulder plane yet they are a nice step up from the standard bench type planes , it took me years to get around to buying one because I thought I could get away with a Stanley 78 rebate.
Then I got one and I was in love with them.
With a rebate and a shoulder plane the blade comes out to the sides on both. with the rebate though the blade angle is up higher, the shoulder it is down lower.
A beautiful plane to use , for more refined work on joins and rebates for veneering and any end grain work as well .
I can get two hands on to the shoulder plane ,and get a fair bit of weight behind it for some serious end grain removal , the narrower blade helps as well with this.
The last picture on bottom is a Stanley 78 the others are shoulder planes , with the Lie Nielsen in the middle.
The medium one in this video would be a nice surprise .
We would love to know what you decide on as well please.

Hi, a lie-nielsen standard angle block plane. Ideal gift, not too lavish, but excellent choice.

Hi K,
If you want to **really** spoil your lucky husband, you could go a little up market...

But Ray, why go "pre-loved" when you can get a brand new Holtey for a mere £6,150 or about Aus$11,100 plus freight, insurance, Customs and GST?
