Itching to get back out to the shed ,but house renovations taking up the time at present.

    Spare blade

that's what I need to get, then I can have one blade beveled at 25° (or so) and a second at 30–35° for hardwood

    Very nice John,
I'm very interested to hear how they go, and also how you find the skew cutting action. I have only dealt with planes with straight irons. I'm just wondering what people's opinions are of skew planes? (particularly working with and across the grain).
    Cheers,
    Al

Skew blades rule across the grain. This is not a surprise to anyone who has used skew-bladed planes.

I have been working (admittedly on-and-off) on a review of the Veritas skew rabbet planes for some 5 months (!). I shall be getting down to finishing this soon and will publish the results. There is a comparison with the Stanley #289 (thanks Peter) - the plane the Veritas pair are modelled after (so a comparison here is going to interest many), the Record #778 (which is The moving filester to have - straight bladed, that is), the ECE skew moving filester (a woodie), and I have thrown in the Stanley #46 (a skew bladed combination rebate/dado plane). The Veritas is used making rebates/rabbets, raised panels, and bread board ends.

John, I'll be looking out for your impression.

    Regards from Perth

The above is an overview of these Skew Rabbet planes with Chris Schwarz, its a brief on how these planes handle.

I apologise for the late response to this thread but with these planes I feel that they are a quality tool from Veritas & Lee Valley.

The only reservation I have at this point is that the handle with it's proximity to the depth adjustment knob would be restrictive to those with really large hands. My hands fit comfortably but then I don't have large hands.

I do like the idea that Veritas have taken with the collets for locking the fence that hold it firm without any hint of movement.I would assume that Veritas have done rigorous testing to the collet system to see how they would play out over time.

This is the Lee Valley page giving more insight on the plane .

I cannot see how these planes would not be an asset in any WW workshop one alone may suffice ,however for those that are capable of using either hand with confidence then the pair of these certainly can accommodate grain direction.

A skewed approach to cutting timber fibres is always going to have that edge over a straight cut in my view ,with this plane it draws the plane into the cut towards the fence with the skewed blade at 30 degrees angle and the blade bedded at 45 degrees.

In all honesty I have not used the plane yet, as there has been a lot going on recently.

    Cheers

Here's a couple of photo's of the two skew planes.

Taken a few shavings off of piece of Camphor Laurel timber cutting both along and, across the grain with the spurs set.

These planes are straight out of the box ,I have'nt yet honed the blades or attached a hardwood guide to the fences.

My apologies. I have yet to put all the material together for my review of the Veritas skews and other rebate planes. It's been an unusual year.

Here are a few images that may interest ...

    Firstly, the skew rabbet planing a ... you guessed! ... a rabbet/rebate ..

These are the shavings you might expect ..
