Personally I'd keep the overhang to a minimum
The fixed jaw should be clear of the benchtop so whatever you're clamping doesn't foul on the benchtop.

On my shop-made bench, the inner (fixed) wooden vice plate is, by the nature of its own thickness, 19mm proud. I have also made up a series of other blocks that I can clamp to the underside of the bench, and that are in line with this fixed plate, so enabling me to clamp anything from vice-width (200mm) to 1.8m nice and securely.

My Sjoberg's bench has somewhat thicker vice plates (c 25mm), and again, I have made up spacer blocks to facilitate lateral clamping - sometimes in conjunction with the vertical array of slotted "dog holes" in the right side front leg, for use with a bench tie-down.

    G'day Farmboy,

Maybe I'm unconventional, but with my 9" Dawn vice the fixed jaw is flush with my bench giving me greater clamping area.

I'm with Waldo. The fixed jaw is set flush with the bench. For long pieces, I can use a clamp across the underside of the bench to get more stability.

Ditto both the above. The fixed jaw on mine is behind a strip which extends for the length of the bench so that when clamping long boards I can use a bar clamp across the bench at the opposite end from the vice.

What Greg want's to know is the overhang on the moveable jaw not the fixed jaw.

My vices are the CT 9" quick release ones and I've attached a 400 mm long wooden face which gives an overhang of 82.5 mm on either side of the vice thereby increasing the clamping area.

    OIC

I fixed a hardwood jaw that is about 400mm long which I relieved a bit on the jointer so that the face is slightly concave to make sure it clamps tight at the ends. It is mounted so that the jaw is flush with the left hand side of the bench so that when you clamp something in the vice, it is supported all the way to the end of the bench, which is good for cross cutting.

    G'day,

Ahh, now I understand the question. In that case I don't have any overhang, just a 1/4" sheet of exterior ply afixed to each jaw and the same size- I don't need any more than that.
