    Default Vickers Sheffield Warranted Saw

    Hi Guys 'n Gals,

Picked up a Vickers Sheffield Warranted saw this weekend.

Blade is mostly straight and true and it seems to cut ok. The handle fits my hand beautifully - much better than the disston saws I've got.

I've googled them but not found anything. Any one know anything about them?

    Cheers all.

These work at 500 rounds per minute and have a range of around 2000 metres. Used for cutting down enemy attacks. Any section that had one of these had the wood on those attacking.
    Oops - wrong Vickers.

Ray G's Backsaw webpage lists them as:

1822 Baines 1822 VICKERS James (&Co.) saw manufacturers Orange Street & Broad Lane
The shape of the handle indicates a very old backsaw, so 1822 would likely be around the mark.
I hope that Ray chimes in with his wisdom.

    Thanks SG.

    Wow!
P'raps this will become less of a user then, and more of a 'maintain till I pass it on" tool. Still gunna copy that handle though. It really is beautiful to hold.

Seems Vickers stuff last a long time, and as you've pointed out, was great at cutting through things . The vickers MG was in service till the late 60's IIRC (the "gunnie" will mean something to those who know their oz military).

    Hi OG,

Now there's a nice saw, good condition too.

Not made by Vickers however, sorry to say. That saw was made by Richard Groves and Sons, the "USE" mark is the clue to the actual maker.

Not sure during what period they would have used the Vickers mark, the general appearance is that of a fairly early saw, the two screws and london flat handle pattern.

There appears to be another mark to the right, can you see if you can make out what it says?

I'd think SG was right, with a tune up, it would be like the other vickers, it should cut through anything.

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi Ray.
    Thanks for dropping in.

It's a previous owners name I think - "F.P. MOORE" on the blade back, with "FRED P. MOORE" in two places on the handle.

Not that I'm any expert, but it doesn't seem to have had much use. Just got a few minor abrasions and dings, a chip off the horn of the handle, and otherwise a patina of age. I think one of the saw nuts has been replaced though.

I nearly didn't buy it ($25). Girlfriend look at me with disdain and said you've already got one haven't you (nup - 12! ) (Doesn't know why I need so many planes either - 80 and counting! ).

So, bottom line is, fettle it up as a user, or keep it for a later collector/madman.

    Cheers

    Hi OG,

Fred P Moore would be no doubt chuffed to know his saw has found a good home.

I did a little digging, and found a post by Simon Barley, regarding Richard Grove's use of the Vickers brand.. They, like most other Sheffield saw makers, they introduced different brand names for their second, third and fourth quality levels during the latter half of the 1800's, when competition was fierce, the Vickers brand was a second level quality saw, the other brands used by Groves were "B Dawson" and "Walsh", for third and fourth level quality saws.

So you have a saw made by one of the best of the Sheffield makers, during the second half of the 1800's. Which makes it 130 years old or there-abouts, and still perfectly preserved after all this time.

Should be a good saw. I'm sure you'll be thinking of Fred P Moore every time you use it.

    Nice find.

    Regards
    Ray

Hi again Ray, and thanks for the info.

Even at 130 years old it looks like Mr Groves always intended his saws to be users so I'm tilting to having this fettled by someone more experienced than me and I'll put it to good use. I sure Fred would approve, and I'm glad he put his name on it. Will probably never know who he was, but I'd like to think that my Lie Nielsen's will bring delight to someone in a 100 years time! (might run out right now and engrave my name in them )

And the GF's a little more impressed, but she did ask if they really made stuff like that back then - !!

Any ideas on kind soles who for reasonable remuneration can fettle a saw?

    Thanks again for the info.

    Cheers
