Morning all,
This was my second WA Wood Show and I enjoyed every minute of it, from 6,30am Thursday when we picked up our display cases from storage at O'Connor, until 11.00am yesterday when we got home after returning them.
We at the HTPS WA display had a steady stream of visitors over the three days and, as usual, I picked up more useful information about the use of my braces and brace tools. One man, a bit older than me, not only knew what the Millers Falls corner brace (No 502) was for, but he'd used one as a youngster on his Grandfathers farm. That's a first for me and one of the many reasons why I enjoy these events so much.
Paul, thanks for the photos, probably could have done without my ugly mug in there, if you come to one of the country shows that we attend you'll be able to see my tools in the raw, so to speak, without the hindrance of the perspex cover.
Good to have a chat with BobL, and idiot or not, pmcgee is always good value with his enthusiasim and sense of humour. Was that an adze in the shopping bag (well some of it was in the bag) that you sidled out with Paul?
The small box in Dereks photo (2012/14) was made by one of our club members and won first prize in its division, pretty good for a first attempt.
Well gotta go, scrub up a couple of new braces I bought at the tool sales table.
Regards,
Geoff.

Thank you Derek for the great range of photo's, especially showing some of the display's and layouts of the show.
I was kind of hoping there would be a photo of the turned laminate ball to show the intricate workmanship that went into it.
CheersJohnno
Everyone has a photographic memory, some just don't have film.

Yes, thanks to Derek for getting some of the 75% of the show I missed
I must have spent at least four hours over Sat and Sun talking to some good blokes about old tools, building boats ... and I may have mentioned saws in there somewhere.
When I turned up on Saturday for the carving demo at 2pm ... it had been changed to 11am. Damn. But had a good talk at the WA Guild of Woodcarvers - and found there is a group near me that meets at 9am Mondays. I went along there this week and met another group of incredibly nice and very helpful people. So it looks like embarassingly amateur carving has moved up the agenda.
PS - I also failed to put two and two together and realise that if there was a Terry Gordon stand ... there might be a Terry Gordon there.
I would have liked to meet him.
Cheers,
Paul

Quiet Area
The CO2 drag cars raced along their track while I walked past their display and several kids' eyes lit up. The fellow on the stand obliged the children's interest by making a couple of cars ready for another race. While doing so he was talking. Some of the things he said didn't seem to make any sense to me. I have a bit of trouble hearing conversations when there are noises in the background so I just accepted the problem was my ears. It was only after a minute or so that I realised I was watching the drag car man talk but hearing the fellow, on the stand behind the drag cars, going through his sales pitch for a novel pulley system.

Quiet Area
Last year we were out in a marquee not far from the log sawing demos and the noise from them was extreme at times. This year the only real noise that affected me was Alex Snodgrass' bandsaw and it was nothing in comparison.
Even a small amount of background noise makes it hard to hear what someone is saying, especially if that person doesn't have a hearing problem, but if they're a bit deaf they usually shout over it.
I thought that the chainsaw mill was making very hard work of it, as I had last year too, so was interested in BobLs comment about them "showing how not to do it" this year. Care to enlighten me please Bob?
Geoff.

I guess I should preface my remarks by saying that I am a lazy bugger and generally use methods that minimize any physical effort required. I also hate working on my knees. This means when chainsaw milling I have devised or adopted methods that avoid or minimise this.
This is my idea of chainsaw milling, slope the log, lock the throttle and sit back and watch it mill by itself.
BTW that stubby was empty and I took this photo for my engineering brother so he could use it in his OHS talks and ask the question, spot the problem.
Now the above scenario does not happen all that often but I do lift and slope logs, and rarely have to push the saw or mill or mill on my knees like those Westford demonstrators were doing at the wood show..
