    Default What is this??

Hi all. Please see photos below. Does anyone have any idea what thus tool is used for? It comes to a very fine edge and is handy for levering but a little too delicate for anything but the lightest of work. Came from my Dad or Grandad.

Overall it is 495mm long, blade 47mm wide at the tip and exposed metal is 350mm long.

My guess is a paint scraper as used on ships. A bit better made than the ones I have used but like most older tools, built to last. I suspect the original wood handle would have been longer for two handed use.

Thanks Rod and John. Tip has bevel both sides and the steel is soft, so I think paint scraper may be the answer. The shaft appears to end in a 4 sided tang and the handle looks newer than the metal, and the ferrule looks like aluminium?

If there's a boat connection, how about a caulking tool? Soft metal doesn't jibe with scraping - barnacles is tough critters....

If it is a caulking iron, I suggest it has been modified, never seen a caulking iron with a wooden handle, it is also too long in my opinion but then I'm not an expert.

I agree with China. Caulking tools dont have wood handles. These are caulking tools and the mallet for them.

I'm thinking bearing or gasket scraper.

Hi D. I just had a quick look on the internet and I think you might well be right. Modern versions of gasket scrapers still have the wide blade and long shaft, but no wooden handles!
