Thread: Another "What's it Worth"

Don’t see many Turner 6’s; especially in that condition. Properly cleaned up and advertised it’ll fetch around $200; as seen in the photo possibly $150. It’s all about presentation and attracting the right buyer.

Perhaps if you want to attract the "collectors" you should not do any "cleaning up"? Methinks that is best left to them as knows what is "cleaning" & what might detract from its value. I'd suggest it's as much a matter of advertising it in the right place as anything else...

OTH, the good condition of the #6 may well be indicative of its worth as a user, the implication being it sat in the tool cupboard for very long stretches while the Stanleys & Records did the work....

As a fairly cautious plane buyer, it is hard to give a reliable estimate without more pictures, but from the two you have included, there are three things that would make me look a bit more carefully, before I would drag out a handful of 50s.
The first is that the adjuster screw does not look like a Turner one - it looks fairly Stanley from what I can see. That might not be a problem if one of the other planes has acquired the Turner knob (identifiable usually by the three grooves around the circumference, rather than the two on a Stanley or Record), and they can be swapped back.
The next is the dribble or bead of what looks like glue (or may be just oil?) on the back of the frog, near the pivot pin. I would recommend taking the blade off, and making sure that this bead is not araldite, holding a broken frog together or sealing a crack (unlikely, but worth checking).
And the third is the diagonal lines on the left hand cheek. I would like to rub my fingernail over them, to see if they are pencil marks or etched lines.
If any one of these revealed a potential issue, it could reduce the value to a collector. If not, I endorse the estimate of $150 (or more) in sound condition.

In addition to what has already been said, the lateral adjuster has been bent and the blade looks short.
Perhaps the blade is a replacement and is simply shorter, but still full length - eg a veritas or similar, or it's original and is fairly well used up.
Definitely check the frog, and look for any cracks at the corners of the mouth.
Check the rear handle to see that it isn't cracked or broken at the base near the forward fixing screw - this can happen with Turners if the handle is allowed to come loose in use, and forward pressure snaps the front.
Any of these issues will reduce its re-sale price

The last Turner #6 sold on the bay went for $450. It looked OK and had a Berg blade. I would suggest that $200-ish is too light if the plane is OK. Collectors have gone ape over Turner planes over the last 12 months or so. I've even seen #4's go for up to $300. The little 220 is the star though. I've seen them go for nearly $1000 although $600 to 800 is more likely.
