They are pretty nice version of a Stanley 78.
Woden were bought by Record and that plane became the Record 778.
It improves on the 78 by having two arms to hold the fence rather than the single arm on the 78.
It would have originally had a wooden knob at the front which would reduce the value to a collector.
Not sure how useful the handle is/was.
The other thing that usually goes missing is the depth stop but that is present and correct.

For what it's worth an unused model in the box sold in the UK last week for $77.

Perhaps slightly on the steep side but it looks like its got all the parts apart from the knob. I would not rule it out if you have a need for one of those I have the WS version of it and they work very well. As said the 2 arms for the fence make it better than the stanley 78. Good also for trimming large tenon cheeks and those things where you wished a shoulder plane had a handle. That one from england would have also been over $50 in shipping. I see what looks like a shop tag on it so perhaps you can try an offer.

I use my 78 regularly. My master gave me mine when i finished my apprenticeship so it's priceless to me, but so I don't know it's $ value. Good tool to have in your arsenal.

I never even knew they were supposed to have a knob. Checking Images, it's not hard to see why they got lost.

$85 is a good price for the seller, but it's not completely out of the bounds of reason, economically speaking. Annnd, in ten years time it'll have cost you around two cents a day and have done more for you than the ABC.

2c a day is not a bad way of looking at it. It did appear to be well made.

The fence guide rails, chrome round rods, had holes in the far end. Cant remember if they had a tapped thread or not. Does anyone know the purpose of the holes.

As I type the inly thing I can think of is that perhaps theynare in backwards and the grub screw to hold them in is meant to go into this hole? I did not check the grub screw set up at the time so just stabbing in the dark here

The holes in the rods are to let you use a nail or something for leverage to unscrew the rods. Something I only became aware of when I wanted to take the rods off.

Yeah, while the price may seem a bit steep to folks like myself (who still thinks in 1966 dollars!), it's a lot less than you'd pay for a LV equivalent. I've got a 78 which was a hand-me-down, so not only was it free, it still has its depth-stop & fence! While I would probably not have rushed out & bought one, I find it extremely useful now that I have it, particularly for trimming tenon cheeks, as someone has already mentioned. Not sure exactly why, but it does that job particularly well, better than the Stanley 10 1/2 I used to use. A skewed blade looks fancier & may do some things better, but the 'square' blade is possibly more jack-of-all-trades, and certainly works well enough for the tasks I put mine to.....

The one that went on UK ebay for AUD$77 might have the front knob, but is missing the knicker.
The one you're looking at has the knicker.

The knicker is much more useful than the knob -- which you have to remove to use the blade in the bull nose position.

    Buy it!
