Default Wife Needs Xmas Ideas - What's a tool you don't use often but really glad you got it.

I pretty much have most the tools I could want but... This Xmas we're only buying one gift each and I need some food for thought to take to my wife.

I got a trim router some time back for the occasional use but it's been used a lot more than I originally thought....

I'll throw a couple things in to get the ball rolling.

Dial Indicators, both digital and mechanical, woodwork use has been to accurately setup the table saw and to check it.

IR Digital thermometer - woodwork use - checking temperature of wood to be glued, especially useful in Canberra winters.

16 line laser level - don't use it much but it's real handy to have.

    Cheers
    Phil

I had this exact scenario a couple of years ago and asked my wife for a small scraper plane.
I found a lovely LN under the tree.
It doesn't get a lot of use but it is the duck's guts when it does.

Skew rebate/rabbet plane (the danger is after using one you will want to rebate everything).
Bullnose plane or combo bullnose/chisel plane.
    Side rebate plane.

In power tool land, maybe a little 12V drill driver for the occasional petite job.

Got all but the Japanese stuff. Good food for thought. Might look a bit further also in that I find western planes hard on the shoulders now so a planes with handlebars probably would find a lot of use

No. 98 and 99 side rebate planes - useful for all sorts of little trimming jobs where everything else just won't fit
No. 20 compass plane - makes curves a breeze
Japanese plane scraper - One of the most useful cheap tools I ever bought; great for cleaning up internal corners and other little bits where a normal scraper is too big

Well, considering how many tools you already have, I'd like to nominate myself as first in line to be adopted.

If you're considering planes with handlebars, perhaps a HNT Gordon smoother? Or perhaps the moving fillister if you need to impress the pants off everyone that sees it.

What about a boxed Record CS 88 Calvert Stevens hand Plane.

I would never use this, I would be afraid things would be cleaned a little too well.
