I usually hang out in the Japanese tool forum but just stopped in and saw this thread. I've made most of my wooden planes over the years and none of them have split yet but I would warn against using BLO for a fix. The wood will not swell and close, I promise and then gluing it back together is not an option. The only option I would consider is gluing in another piece of wood to fill the gap or a couple of butterflies to keep it from spreading. If you clamp it will it close up? Glues, putties, or any other fillers will not move or act like the wooden sole so keep the repairs wooden.

Thanks woodjoint, what you say makes sense . I'll put a laminated sole on eventually, which will also solve the large mouth problem.

    Cheers
