    Default WoodRiver #7

Woodcraft were a little uncertain as to when the WR #7 would be available as the QC Dept had failed the first batch that arrived at woodcraft about 6 weeks ago. They tell me that a couple of the Product Development fellas visiting the factory in an effort to improve the quality, subsequently a small batch was airfreighted to the US last week and passed QC - I have my order in transit at present and expect them in my stock next week.
They will be checked, mouths set at 0.010" (10 thou.) and honed prior to sales.
Andy was correct - US$300 in the US - I will have them at $375 including the tweek 'n hone and GST.
They tell me they are the size of a #7 but the weight of a #8.
I also have IBC Premium blades of the same thickness for those who want an extra blade.
I have them up on my website already - good pic and full description will come in a week or so.

Jim - thanks for the update

I'll wander on down and pick one up when you have the #7 in stock, so maybe you could post here when you receive them or PM me?

Always an excuse to head down the escarpment and visit Phil Gould's fine timber repository on the same trip !

    Cheers

I have seen pix of several similar planes and they appear to be from the same factory but after examination of the castings I can say that they not all the same - The WoodRiver differ from the others in small details like sizes and shapes of bosses etc.

WoodRiver is a house name of Woodcraft USA
Quansheng is a house name of Workshop Heaven UK
Torquata is a house name of Timbecon Aust
McJing sell some Chinese block planes - I guess they are Quansheng

Woodcraft USA tell me they own all the tooling and the planes are made to their specifications, which are higher than the others.

The WoodRiver planes are totally made in China, they don't have Canadian parts (blades), I do have Canadian IBC blades for anyone that wants an upgrade.

Rob Cosman works with Woodcraft USA and also sells the WR planes in Canada.

I'll have the full range at the TWWW Show in Melbourne end of next week.

    Jim,

I let a friend try out the no6 last week. She was jointing Maple for the back of a viola, and asked me to pass on that is the best plane she's ever used.

    cheers,

The other planes I own are Veritas BU (including the jack), but for a jointer I wanted something with a bit more heft to it.

The Veritas BU jointer is a nice plane (and I could use all my existing blades...), but it is fairly lightly built for such a long plane.

I've tried the WoodRiver #6, which was surprisingly heavy for that size of plane, so their #7 should be a great jointer (at about half the price of the LN).

Andy - local price for the LN#7 is $539 + postage, total probably $560?

Undoubtedly cheaper to buy from LN USA, but since the thing weighs just under 4kg I think you'll be up for about the same or more by the time you get it here !

For some of the bigger or heavier planes, local prices on Veritas and LN aren't actually that bad, plus no chance of it getting damaged in transit.

Yep, I just realised after posting (which is why I deleted my post). Same goes if you bought the WR overseas!

I just checked, and even the WR #6 actually weighs slightly more than the Veritas BU jointer. Just confirmed the impression I had from picking up the Veritas plane at Carbatec.

At that rate, the WR #7 might even be heavier than the LN......

It'll need a good run up....

WoodRiver #7 Bench Planes are included in a shipment which has been delayed through Aust. Customs - AQIS have very strict rules on wooden items from China, which I totally agree with because they have some nasty wood eating bugs in Asia and we don't want them here eating our wood.

Consequently there will be a delay of 7-14 days before I receive them.

    So, Jim...

Any chance a 5 1/2 size Woodriver might be making its way into production?

    Cheers,

    Liam

    Hi Liam,

    Sorry but I don't have any news of a WoodRiver #5 1/2

    Well that got my attention!

I've been considering getting a 4 & 6 from Jim but I've got planes that do the job atm but Jim would receive my order the instant it was available.

Default The WoodRiver V3 #7 has landed......

......and at just over 4.2kg it landed pretty hard

Picked up my WoodRiver V3 #7 from Jim Davey yesterday, and couldn't be happier with it. Machining is first class, all controls operate very smoothly (esp. the lateral adjust with bearing), and having been prepared by Jim it easily took sub 1 thou shavings straight out of the box. A touch of wax on the sole, and she's flying.

I have attached a few pics from the family album (with jarrah shavings....). The third pic is just my baby Lie-Nielsen block plane sniffing around the rear end of the newcomer to check it out; you know what planes are like....

This is the first proper plane I've bought from Jim (I'm a bit slow to catch on... ), but would highly recommend his fettled WoodRiver planes. It may have taken WoodRiver a couple of goes to get there, but when you could get two planes of this quality for the price of one L-N bench plane......

One thing this plane did show up was that the outfeed table of my jointer was ever so slightly misaligned, as every dressed board I've tried with the #7 had ever such a slight hollow along the length - now fixed
