my new woodriver no. 6
so my new woodriver no.6 arrived yesterday. I'll tell u what i like about this plane: everything. When i noticed that the backlash was gone, i was like finally QUICK depth adjustment rather than spin spin spin spin engagement. Honestly though when i first saw the threaded rod's length i thought it was way too long. Now i look at it and it doesnt bother me. Body paint is awesome. I really like the ball bearing on the lateral adjuster, less friction, very very nice. Look at the last picture, thats the magic of handplanes for those that dont know. It's what every plane junkie strives for.

A nice looking plane with a nice looking result.
It appears that it is giving you a lot of pleasure.
And this is why we are woodworkers.
Enjoy.

Can I be rude enough to ask how much it cost shipped to Australia?
Did you have to fettle it much before use?

i wont answer the first question. As far as fettling goes, i sharpened the blade with 10k japanese waterstone. Put a front and back bevel on the blade, rob cosman style. Set the frog adjustment screw forward a bit for a tight mouth. Flattened sole of plane with 80 grit sandpaper. Sanded chipbreaker edge so it makes contact across entire width of blade. Thats it.

Hey Chris, if your looking for a woodriver plane (No.3,4,5 or 6) have a look at this Aussie site.
Jim Davey Planes & Sharpening - Home
click on EShop-Sales, then Woodriver planes. I have seen them on 1 or2 other Oz sites and Jim Davey was cheaper than both of them. His claim - ""Honed sharp (by JD), ready to use right out of the box.""

I bought a Woodriver #6 from JD's site. I did find it the cheapest of the Aussie-based sites.
My previous plane was an Irwin Record #4 which I had attempted to fettle myself - flatten the sole to #180 grit, flatten the frog, lapped and sharpen the blade to a #6000 water stone, but could never get the whisper thin shavings that you see.
5 mins after unpacking the new #6 and I was getting them! The only work I did was to unpack the plane from the box and adjust the blade depth.
I eventually managed to get the same from the Irwin #4 by upgrading to a Rob Cosman/IBC blade/chip breaker combo. But I had to widen the throat so that the much thicker blade protrudes thru the sole.

Might well be made in China - I noted that the label on the box indicated that it is made there. However, I think I saw a YouTube video with Rob Cosman talking about it, and it might actually be a mix of Chinese and Canadian parts (e.g. blade).
All I can say is that the overall finish and quality of the plane body far surpasses my Irwin Record #4, and for not much more. If you factor in the time and money I spent trying to fettle the #4 (had to buy paper, files, etc.) - I could have bought a Woodriver #4 and it would have been cheaper. In the end, I got a IBC/Cosman blade/chip breaker for the #4 and its much, much better.
As I said in my previous post, I got my Woodriver from #6 Jim Davey and its was good to go straight out of the box.

I have a QS 62 LA BU plane with 3 blades. Different angles supplied, I hope to get a toothing blade also. Really good value, well made. Stainless Steel unmarked cap iron on mine. It worked straight out of the box, but a few minutes work on the blades improved it further. I have a Cosman blade on my Marples no.5 shory, brilliant but such a pain to get it to fit. I lowered the frog about 1 1/2mm and widened the mouth slightly. Brilliant now. My other planes have Smoothcut Laminated steel blades with QS chipbreakers, with the exception of the no.3 which has a QS blade and chipbreaker combo, another hour spent with the file to get it to work.

WoodRiver Planes
Yes, WoodRiver Planes are made in China.
I have seen pix of several similar planes and they appear to be from the same factory but after examination of the castings I can say that they not all the same - The WoodRiver differ from the others in small details like sizes and shapes of bosses etc.
WoodRiver is a house name of Woodcraft USA
Quansheng is a house name of Workshop Heaven UK
Torquata is a house name of Timbecon Aust
McJing sell some Chinese block planes - I guess they are Quansheng
Woodcraft USA tell me they own all the tooling and the planes are made to their specifications, which are higher than the others.
The WoodRiver planes are totally made in China, they don't have Canadian parts (blades), I do have Canadian IBC blades for anyone that wants an upgrade.
Rob Cosman works with Woodcraft USA and also sells the WR planes in Canada.
I'll have the full range at the TWWW Show in Melbourne end of next week.

Hi Andy,
I can say that Woodcraft is in the process of expanding the range - but that is all I can say at this stage.
Watch my website for news at it comes to hand.
