I should stop trying to speed read threads.
    .
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

come on ficfac let us know how you have gone with your new toy.
I enjoy the banter about tools.
I decided to take up Monoman's offer to go over and have a look at the Woodriver planes and see how well they worked and felt in person. From what I can tell the are great tools. Monoman has spent a little time tuning them up and they work a treat on some nasty timber. Thanks for the opportunity to try before I buy Monoman your hospitality was much appreaciated.
By the way, the finish straight off the plane was just great. Shavings of less than 0.0005" in some nasty looking("wicked")timber.

For me, I've paid my money for a #4 and a #5. Value for money and they will work well. I'll give some more informed feedback once I've had a week or three with them.

I'm fairly new to the wood working thing so I'm sure I don't have the plane tuning experience of many of you out there. I have some HNT Gordon's, some Veritas and I've made about 20 or so Wooden planes (HNT Kits and blades and some of my own with both O1 and D2 blades). I have access to some early Stanleys and a swag of #4 Stanley's from the 80's (not great I know but that's what the students at school have to work with). Lots to learn and lots of things to try.
    Stay tuned
    Kevin

One thing about the premium planes that hasn't been mentioned (I don't think so anyway) is that they surely must help with self honesty. If you can't do a good job with them you've no-one else to blame.
Though on second thoughts, if manufacturers keep bringing out 'improved' versions there still is some leeway for kidding oneself.
    Cheers,
    Jim

It's down to the Japanese now Ian. They're still making obsidian knives and keeping it all going.

As this thread seems to wandering off the original topic and all views have been expressed and debated I think the thread needs closing.
