Default Advice Needed Re Kunz tools

    Greetings All,
By luck I find myself for the week in Friedrichsdorf in Germany, north of Frankfurt.

Having a beer in a local bar las night I noticed on the coaster an advertisement for Andreas Kunz with a picture of a plane. This sparked something in my mind. So back at my hotel, jumped on the internet and found yes Kunz in Germany do make planes (amongst some other tools).

As luck would have it, Kunz is located in Friedrichsdorf as well.

So not being much of a Darksider I come to seek advice.......

How are Kunz planes considered in terms of quality and value for money?

I notice Carbatec have a few planes and they seem relatively cheap.

Can anyone offer any advice here? Is this an opportunity for me or a waste of time?

    Cheers from freezing Friedrichdorf,

    Glenn

Don't know about their planes, but their spokeshaves are at the lower end of the market.

Kuntz are generally marginally better then modern Stanley's however not as good as pre-war Stanley's.

They are marginally better then the stuff that comes out of India.

With allot of work you can get them to work.

However they are not worth it in my view.

If you not a dark sider thee tools will not convert you.

It would be interesting to know if they have a better quality tool than what is imported in Australia.

I have tried out size #3 (oldish) and size #5 (new) but I do not own one.

I had a feeling that these bench planes were much better than Anants, and a bit better than new Stanleys. Their casting and finish tolerances would make the difference. Carbon steel iron is generally decent, too. There is also option for HSS iron, possibly made of HSS type T1 (common HSS in Europe)

It is claimed that everredgreen colour scheme was intentionally chosen to be unattractive to thiefs in construction sites and schools. Well, I have seen one damn stylish Kunz bench plane refinished with great japanning, was a looker, I'd say.

About their lacking of some adjusting features compared to Bailey design, here is some commenting on that: http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworki...t.aspx?id=5854

Check out general pricing here: http://www.fine-tools.com/eputz4.htm
You might find better offers locally at that region.

BTW, while being thereabouts, check out FAMAG drill bits and router bits. I especially recommend their carbide tipped brad points, won't find better ones with that price anywhere .

    Hi Glenn,

can't say anything about Kunz from own experience. They're not known as the best tools on the marked. Some say even Anant is better.

That said, a member from german forum visited the factory in spring and told they are improving the tools. You could buy a #53, these are rare and can be tuned easily.

    Thanks for the response guys.
Doesn't sound like I should make too much of an effort to get over there. However, looks like I may have a spare afternoon I might seek it out.

    Cheers blokes,
