    Default What are Workmates like

    Gidday everyone

I'm thinking of getting my hands on the latest Workmate model.............I'm thinking of matching it up with a Zyliss Vice and a Melamine slab to use as Router table for plunging and hand held use.

Anyone got any feedback on what Zyliss Vices are like?

And whats the go with the Workmate?...................Most blokes who I have asked to date swear by em!!

    Allhelp really appreciated!!!

Router tables really need a bit of weight in them so they dont move around while using them.

Workmates are great in any form, and if you need weight a sandbag or two will work, although I used to get away with my foot on the cross member most of the time.

If you've got a goodie, get a cheapie as well because you can then clamp things of an inifinite length.

They were all I had for about 20 years, so you won't get me to say a bad word about them!

    Cheers,

    Default workmate

I've had my workmate 50 years next year.
Never needed a sandbag to hold her down.

You're a brave man! (Unless, that is, your workmate never looks over your shoulder while you're communicating with your fellow BBers).

C'mon! EVERYBODY needs a Workmate!....... If you do decide to conform to the norm, (emphatically NOT "Norm") see you get one of those nice wide ones. You are not supposed to climb up on Workmates; 'course everybody does...they tip! The wide ones reduce this problem and are a godsend for those of us with 10' high ceilings etc....or shorties?

    Default Playmates, workmates?

If playmates are scantily clad bunny girls, then are workmates big, ugly hairy blokes wearing bib and brace overalls with bunny tails and ears? Or worse still, big, ugly hairy blokes wearing nothing but their nailbags and bunny tails and ears?

Which just reminded me: My cousin and I were building a house for a couple on a property. Lovely people and the lady used to come on site and take piccys. She left her camera behind one day so we stripped off and posed for a photo (on the timer) wearing nothing but our nailbags and boots. Didn't tell her of course, just let her find out when she got them developed She had a good laugh and kept the photo! She was used to our practical jokes, we nailed her ugg boots to a pack of timber one day when she left them behind. But we skew nailed through the edge of the sole with a finishing gun, so no damage done.

Get the Workmate - brand name product - there is/was a dint & scratch outlet at Kingsgrove in Sydney, it may now be at Homebush. Or look for the B&D/DeWalt repair & warehouse in your state as required.

You don't need the Zyliss Vise to make a router table - there are free plans on the 'Net for a router table that builds onto one leaf of a Workmate.

    REally appreciate the feedback fellas!!

Looks like a new workmate's on the wish list........... Not sure if I was clear in my first post. Am planning to use the workm8 (On top of its normal duties) as a base for a melamine slab to do free hand routing and plunging on eg: Using guide bushings ; template guides etc etc Not as a Router table.

I'm interested in incorporating the Zyliss vice into the setup and probs the workm8..................anyone own one of these vices? I'd really like to hear what there like first hand???

bsrlee! any chance of posting a link to these plans??????

    OK

I couldn't get thru to the site for a while there - I think my ISP is doing funny things with the bandwidth & server access.

    http://www.popularwoodworking.com/fe...ea.asp?id=1108

That is the direct link. Follow it back up the tree for a page of freebies.

The PWW site is a bit funny - they seem to 'plough-under' a lot of their free plans - but the plans are still on the server, just no longer linked to the free projects page - if you go to one of the Woodwork link-farms and follow their direct link, it still works. Weird. And their book are pretty good too.

Anyhow, they seem to have posted a whole lot of new plans & projects, so I'll down load my own copies.

Make sure the workmate is a B&D as the copies tend to be a bit shaky, it's about the only thing that B&D make thats worth having.

    Lou,

There was a discussion on this recently. I believe Derek Cohen posted on it. So a search may help you.

I have seen one being used at my french polishing class and I was not very impressed with them. For the money they cost you would be better of spending that money on a collection of clamps rather than a fancy one.
