For a grand I'd want a decent photo to start with...

gobsmacked. I am sure you can get a Lee Valley or Lie Nielsen equivalent for less and it will be a better plane too.

The only plane I'd spend $1000 on would have a "Boeing" label on it!

But your lee valley or lie nielsen will be worth 1/2 to 2/3 original cost where as that one will be double to 2000 in ten to 15 years. To be honest impliments such as these shouldn't be viewed as if they are tools - that's just about the last thing they are.

Somebody ended the auction early with "buy it now" I'm sure it would have topped that if the option wasn't there.
Doubtful that I would ever have a number 1 on my mantle.. but I see nothing wrong with the collectors who do, even at a grand or two.

Hell of a lot better than collecting Star wars figurines or belly button fluff.

You have a good point Toolin. Mind you that is a whole different world to my world. They are tools to me nothing more or less. Which isn't to criticise collectors just that it doesn't really gel with me.

I agree with you - they're just tools. That's why I've off loaded some really fine examples of tools in the past and replaced them with veritas or a user grade tool. There are times when you just have to give in and let them go. There's a time to perserve the past.

In the past I didn't have a liking for collectors as I blamed them for the increadible rise in prices of old tools and I was a bit toffee nose towards them - at least I knew how to use the tool, I'd think. But at some point in the past I had to look inwards and say what the hell is it to me if someone likes to buy tools simply to look at them. The only answer is, it's none of my bloody business. So now it's good on them I say. And to be honest there are a lot of collectors that are doing a good thing in perserving the past. I had a mate in Canada that had an increadible collection. It was the best place to hang out and get inspired on what tool make next.
