Default 3/8in bore blade not fitting on 3/8in arbor

    Hi all,

I recently bought a sherwood hybrid 12in table saw and the specs say it has a 3/8in arbor. Problem is that a blade with a 3/8in bore won't fit all the way onto the arbor. It will go over the thread, but won't seat on the smooth steel ring right against the inner plate. I've found a blade with a 16mm bore fits just fine, but I've bought blades with 3/8in bores expecting them to fit. Has anyone else had this problem with a saw? Am I missing something?

    Dave

I think you mean 5/8" not 3/8". Is it only the one 5/8" bore blade that won't fit? It's a bit curious that the blade will fit over the threaded section of the shaft but not the shoulder section. Have you checked for any inconsistencies/burrs etc. on the shoulder or between where the shoulder and the thread meet?

Sounds like the arbor is 16mm not 5/8", which is 15.875mm. The diameter of the thread is always slightly under the nominal size, hence the blades fitting over it. Measure the shaft diameter with a vernier or micrometer. Reducing bushes are available in both 16mm & 5/8" so both sizes must be used by different saw makers.

The specs for this saw say it has a 5/8" arbor so whether the blade has a 5/8" or 16mm bore is should fit on the arbor providing there is no damage to the arbor or the blade bore. Maybe you have created a very small burr where the thread meets the plain section when trying to fit the blade by not having the blade dead square to the shaft when trying to get it onto that plain section.

Yes sorry 5/8 (imperial numbers mean nothing to me).

There are no burrs or inconsistencies that I can see or feel. I measured it with verniers and the shoulder is 15.92 while the bore is 15.88. They're very close and it's possible the error in my measuring is greater than the difference between these 2 measurements. Timbecon assure me that it's a 5/8mm arbor rather than 16mm. I think better have another look over it for a burr.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I measured the shoulder section of the arbor with verniers and it was 15.92. The bore in the blade is 15.88. I got in touch with Timbecon and they assure me it's 5/8 not 16mm. I'll have to have another look for burrs.

Thanks. I'll have another look over it for burrs.

    5/8" = 15.875 mm. Is arbor oversize?

Get a piece of fine emery cloth and run it on the shoulder of the arbor with the saw running. Be careful and if it catches be ready to let the emery cloth go in a hurry.

Did the saw come with a starter blade? I'd be checking the 5/8th spec is correct, this should be fairly obvious if the original supplied blade is not 5/8th?

p.s. I had a look at the manual downloadable from the Timbecon website and the specs say "Blade Arbor.........................................................................................5/8” (16 mm)"

    Gday Dave

    I'm interested in your post;
what do you think of the Sherwood Hybrid 12 inch T/S, please.

It reads like a good saw, but a user review is much better.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

    Cheers
    Keith

Dave....a solution to your dilemma would be to measure as accurately as you can, the spindle then go to an engineering company and ask them to ream out the blades to the spindle dimension. Don't try to drill it out yourself. The amount of material to be removed is very small. A reamer will "sneak up" on the right dimension and keep the blade concentric. It will cost for the time taken to do the reaming but it will be done and done right
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Did you purchase this new? Call Timbecon and ask them to fix it.

I had a motor fail on a near new saw and they found a local business that could fit the replacement motor they sent up (I'm a long way from Melbourne).
Different issue, but they sorted the problem, and were very helpful with another minor issue that surfaced later.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Fuzzie,

I've been in touch with Timbecon and yeah specs say 5/8 but it seems like there might have been a mixup in the factory and some came with 16mm arbors instead of 5/8.

    Hey Jeffen,

Yep I've been in touch with Timbecon. It seems like that factory may have fitted 16mm arbors to some saws for some reason. Apparently there is another customer with a similar problem. Working with them to get it sorted now and I'll keep you all posted with how that goes.

    Cheers,
    Dave
