    Default Aftermarket table saw fence

    Hello All,

I've been absent from the forum for a long time. Life.

Literally a few months ago had to clean the shed up so I could access all of the tools and equipment to help a niece with a woodworking project. Probably the first time in 5 years I used the gear to make something...with my career and family I am so time poor that Woodworking has taken a back seat. Funny thing though, I really enjoyed making the project with my niece.

A spark was generated and it set fire to the sawdust in my head. Rebirth...adapt, overcome, destroy....nope wrong dream...

start small. So there is a plan to massively de-clutter the shed, strip it back to what it needs to have and either sell, give away or throw out what is not required. There is a shop made cyclone plan in there but that can be for another thread. Once that is done I can re-embrace the smell of sawdust and the smell of timber being worked...and hot glue guns being left on....

But something that has bothered me for a long time raised its ugly head again.

Back in about 2011'ish' I bought a Carbatec MJ2325CT 3Hp plain Jane, very vanilla table saw. I love the saw, it's big and flat and the motor has got heaps of grunt to cut the toughest of woods.....BUT that freaking crap fence...you know it, round profile rail that actually locks the BACK of the fence against the rear rail and not at the front like a biesemeyer style fence....as bad as ever...moves when you look at it...where it can be 3-4mm out front to back....just rubbish.

So with thanks to the Australian Government and my tax return money burning a hole in my pocket I went out into the world to seek a replacement fence. Remembering that at almost every point in my woodworking life glancing longingly at after market fences and thinking that they could be the answer to my wayward table saws need for a decent fence.

    ********** REALITY CHECK -- REALITY CHECK *********

Sadly with the plethora of overseas table saw fences which NONE ship to Australia I have literally found 2 with a third possible....BTW not spending a gazillion dollars on an Incra...

    https://www.timbecon.com.au/table-sa...plete-assembly $299
I am sure this is an adequte fence but it feels a bit pov and in a field with better fences out there its a distant 3rd.

HVY-HB30-Fence and Rail System - Major Woodworking Equipment $385
This feels like the fence that Carbatec and Hare and Forbes used to sell. My front runner until anything better comes along

Oliver 4016 Tablesaw - Major Woodworking Equipment
This tablesaw is about $4100 but the fence and rails are available to buy as a spare part. Price TBC once I can confirm price and availability but it looks pretty solid, as befitting a $4100 table saw. If it is reasonable I think this is my guy...unless I get a better offer...

I am aware of the Super cool tools T-Square but by the time you order it, get the fence, ship it, make the rails and put it on the saw it's a lot of coin...seems fabulous but yeah, nah....

So, good folk of the woodworkforums, what say you, what am I missing? Anyone got a beat on something else? More than willing to pay up to $500 for something decent, strong and repeatable, but the US fences are $329-$400 USD before freight IF YOU CAN FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL SEND IT TO AUS, and you get smashed on the exchange rate... is making my own with barely there welding skills the answer? Please help as I feel there are a lot of people looking for the answer to this riddle...I hope there is more because it is very sad if this is as good as it gets.

Just so you know, the aluminium extrusion that SCT use is available on eBay for a fraction of what they ask ...

    MK 2080 T slot extrusion, aluminium profile 20mmx80mm $2.8/100mm | eBay

    I turned this ...

    ... into this ...

This may give you some ideas, or just reduce the cost of the SCT fence. Check that you get the correct extrusion. There are many available locally. The 1m length I bought cost around $20.

So today I found more info on the Oliver 4016 fence:

    Oliver table saw fence 1.jpg

    Oliver table saw fence 2.jpg

    Oliver table saw fence 3.jpg

This fence will be available when it arrives from Major Woodworking in Sydney (Early December) with front and rear rails for $415 which I think is a cracking price for a heavy duty fence (considering an equivalent heavy duty fence from the states would be $500+ before you freighted it to Australia (if you could find somene to send it to you). Their other fence is okay but for an extra $30 it gives reading to the right AND to the left of the blade, so it is a little more useful. It looks good too.

Once I get it and fit it I will give the forum a review and take some pictures to share.

I have ordered one and I am very keen to get it and replace ol' never straight...

That is a bloody good price.

I'm selling my cabinet saw, but not the Incra fence, so need a replacement (or at least a link to one for the buyer).

Thanks for doing all the hard work for me!!!!

Funnily enough when I was talking to Carbatec a few months ago the guys there was telling me that the sawstop fence was available as an accessory but he thought it might be the wrong side of $600...so I think $415 is a standout bargain, but certain the same fence it made by one company and sold to Table saw manufactureres to put "their" sticker on it as it lookls the same as quite a few "american" saws...

I have am MSB300 3hp. it eats anything I push thru it so long as the blade is sharp. I removed the aluminium face from the fence and installed a bloody big quarter sawn dense heavy bit of jarrah as the primary fence face. see attached pic.

The reason I did this is that it allowed me to have a longer fence which in turn means when I process rough sawn timber the elongated fence of the tablesaw (which is also taller than the normal factory fitted aluminium one) allows me to use the tablesaw as a jointer (the fence sticks out proud of the infeed side of the tablesaw by about 80 cm which means non straight timbers can be fully supported over their whole lengths AGAINST THE FENCE, which in turn means they run true past the blade and come out on the outfeed side straight). every now and then (eg when it rains or is especially hot) I use a straight edge to make sure the jarrah board hasn't warped. its been 3 or 4 years now and its still straight as a gun barrel. again: quartersawn dense timber is required here...

I always measure the distance between the blade and the fence instead of relying on the tablesaw ruler so measurements are no big deal. with the MSB300 allowing a cut height of about 90mm I can usually get away without using the jointer and thicknesser for most timbers. this saves time and effort and was cheaper than some store bought bloody thing.

    good luck

    Thanks for the post!!

I'm at the same point with a slightly earlier version - the MJ2325B table saw. Think I'll go done the same path as yourself.

    Cheers

    Default Make one

My old man has built almost 100 sliding table panel saws, and he makes the fences for them. They are simple, robust, and perfectly accurate. Theyre just a triangular shaped piece of 25 mm ply with a cleat on the saw blade side that takes a hardwood fence, it has a slot to slide the fence forward and back, and a steel angle at the front which hooks over the rail along the front of the table , with a locking bolt with a knob. Simple, and has served the purpose well for about 50 years or so.

Curious to know if both the Harvey fence and Oliver fence are long enough to fit the 800mm deep table top of the MJ2325?

did his world go pear shaped?
did anyone else but the same fence?

Keen to know this too. I have a new 12" cabinet saw with a 50" beisemeyer style fence on it. It's absolutely fine and good but the rails are too big for my space and my needs. So, I'll either cut the rails down, or, sell to someone who wants to upgrade to a bigger fence, and buy a smaller complete fence system to replace it. Oliver option looks good.

@SWR, come back and tell us what happened!

So firstly apologies for the delay but the fence itself is still not here!!!

I have been chasing the supplier since early January to no real avail.

I spoke to the supplier today and he gave me some cock and bull story about the rails arriving but not the fence and was wanting to give me a lesser fence of a lower spec
table saw. I am going to head out there next week to find out is going on with this - I ordered this in OCTOBER FFS!!!

I hope it is all some tragic story as the fence they are proposing is not as good as the one I ordered.

I will update the thread once I have visited them.

    Thanks Scott for your update!

It’s interesting to see your comments as I too have been having issues with Major Woodworking. I liked your option and have been chasing them on the fence and rail system since January but those in the shop are less than helpful over the phone to the point where they are discouraging me from purchasing the set. I may just bite the bullet and go elsewhere as I haven’t paid for anything yet.

Hope you have a good outcome and interested to hear of your results.

    Regards

So I travelled to Major woodworking to get to the bottom of the wayward table saw fence. I can recall at the time of "ordering" the fence in October that Major said there was a shipment of them on their way. I asked could one be put aside for me. Skip ahead skip ahead....all through the previous 4 months I have been asking about the delivery. Well that was all blown away when I turned up there today and without asking he knew why I was there...and he explained that the set of rails (one) turned up without the fence...and the best he could do was a set off a Harvey saw (Master Rip Fence picture) Definitely a poorer alternative compared to the one I was offered. I asked the question how long before the Oliver fence was on site - wasn't that happy to give me an answer but 3 months was the timeframe it "might" turn up in. Walked away from the supplier...

Called Carbatec Sydney and spoke to a knowledgeable man there by the name of Mark. I ask the question - how much for the SawStop fence. $250 the fence $250 the rails - in stock (for the professional model T-Glide) . I'm on my way!!! So I get there and it turns out when I went to purchase the fence that they had one part but not the other - it's in Brisbane. BUT I do have the longer fence (Industrial T-Glide) but it is more expensive....how much more? $58 more for what looks like 6 inches more fence. DONE!!! I picked up the master rip and it was like Meh....okay....I picked up the Sawstop T-Glide fence and thought Fudge me that is seriously heavy...difference in quality could be felt immediately. So whether it is the pro fence for $500 or the Industrial for $558 I think it is a cracker of a fence. The rails gives a full 36" of cut to the right of the fence an a decent amount to the left as well.

As far as fitting the fence, well that will have to wait as I am knee deep in painting and house Reno's at the moment but will do a how to fit it guide once I do. first 2 photos are the Master Rip Fence and the second 2 are the Sawstop T-Glide fence.

More than I was initially wanting to spend but it is so much more sturdy than the fence offered.
