Spent a couple of hours today adjusting everything up, it short, it now works beautifully but it seems that the quality of the unit just wasn't that great. After adjusting the arbor position a few times it was also clear that the carriage didn't have sufficient travel in the trunnions, so some grinding of the underside of the table was in order too.

'Twas a fair amount of effort involved to get it all working properly, but the outcome is that I can take cut marks off a freshly ripped board with a single pass of a smoothing plane.

It really amazes me how much one needs to know about metal working to be a woodworker!

Probably better than new - well done !

From the photo it looks like you can tweak the alignment by shimming (bits of cut up coke can are good.....)

That photo is with a guestimated 3mm shim, but I replaced it with some 2mm aluminium and shimmed up to finished position with some gal roofing (0.5mm). I'm glad I did it this way because I needed to make adjustments in two dimension in the end. If I'd bored and sleeved I'd potentially be stuck with a still incorrect position.

Better than new is right, pity I'm still missing some parts though. More engineering chalenges for me in the future.

    Great fix there Kman .
At least you know your saw now ,probably better than the manufacturer.
