    Default Fence MiniMax combo help

    I have an old problem with the mult-purpose fence on my Mini Max Lab 30 combo machine. The fence serves both the saw table and the planer table and is made from aluminium 1300mm long by 100mm height . It is basically useless for planing stock square as its face is convex in the vertical.

    I have tried attaching 18mm hardwood ply and faced MDF to the fence face but I find this material is not true enough nor sufficiently stable for this task. Also I enquired to have the face of the fence machined true but apparently the fence material { 4mm aluminium) is not thick enough and the cost would exceed the price of a new fence.


    The fence rides on a 40mm square hollow tube which is attached to the front edge of the planer table and the fence has to be removed to use the thicknesser. The adjustment mechanism for squaring the fence is very cumbersome consisting of 2 large bolts and washers and is hopeless for squaring the fence to the table face. I have attached photos of same.

    I am considering the following options


    Replace the entire fence arrangement with a Biesmere style fence to be fixed to the 40mm tube. I will be approaching suppliers for same.


    Source and attach machined steel plate to the existing fence face.


    Source and Fit a planer fence on the saw table on the planer table edge utilising exist bolt holes In the saw table that are currently used for the shaper fence. This fence would have to be able to be removed when using the saw table. { location shown on attached photo).

    I would very much like to hear from anyone who has any ideas or replaced or modified a fence on a similar machine.

    Hi

    I have a Robland combination machine to which I added a new planer fence assembly from a Chinese machine. More information and some pics in post 7 of

    Fitting this involved drilling and tapping one extra hole in the saw table - not difficult but obviously a thing to be done with great care.

    I have found this to be really effective, I have put a lot of stock over this planer recently.

    This type of fence is held in the middle, rather than at the end and is consequently quite rigid. I can't say that I think that a 1.3m ali fence held at one end is a great idea.

    Thanks for info re your replacing planer fence. It looks ideal to fit my Mini Max. I will contact Leda for a new fence, the same type as you fitted.
    What length was the new fence you purchased and any idea of part number??

    I appears the holes in my saw table will accomodate a fence base.

    So far I have received no info from Mini Max (Gabbett Machinery) but they will kindly send out a techno person at $130 per hour (no thank you).

    Your help is really appreciated.

    Hi Brad

    As it stands it is around 1120mm long and 150mm high. It was bit long when I got it and had a machining flaw at one end so I cut around 100mm off and solved both issues. It cost me around an hour of Gabbet's time but the dollar was a little higher then.

    I don't have the model details as I happened to walk into Leda and saw one installed on a machine and asked them is they could get me one. It took some months. I think that they are a common fence for all of the Chinese combination planer thicknessers. I have seen them on several brands.

    It fits to the table with two bolt holes on app 132.5mm centres. In my case one hole is one of the shaper fence holes and one I drilled and threaded, this is quite easy the sawtop is cast iron. The bracket slides along the fence so the location of the holes isn't critical. I would not wish to insult you by stating the obvious but you need to be very careful as to what is on the other side of the table top when you drill it.
